Normally this forum has its most business between 11pm-7am EST. Wouldnt ya know it, on April 1st that didnt happen. Go figure.

For those not on last night, I put the wrong month in the title.

Artemis 2 launch in about 6 minutes.
I watched it. Set an alarm to remind me. Was pretty cool. This time the furthest any human will be beyond Earth

Another interesting data point. This Artemis project is 100 billion. The California high speed rail is now 135 billion. How is it cheaper to send people the the moon then to run a rail between two cities in the same state? Answer: Because the moon is not in California....

My BIL is an assistant chief engineer on this project. He works for Aerojet/Rocketdyne in Socal who built the engines for this. Many years and man hours on this. Back in space NASA.

That's awesome. We have an Aerojet up here in Folsom. But they seem to be sleeping most of the time. Not much comes out of there anymore. Many people here used to work there. Now many don't even know what they are or that they even exist

I believe they assisted in the testing and modifications to the Soviet NK-33 rocket engines found in a Russian warehouse. Crazy story. But that's all history now. Haven't heard of them testing an engine for over ten years now. I keep hearing about the inevitable closer. But they're still there

Rocketdyne built the original Saturn V engines here in the San Fernando valley. If I remember correctly they had a perfect track record with no failures of any of the engines. I grew up 2 miles from the manufacturer of them and about 6 miles from the Santa Susan Laboratory testing grounds. You could feel the ground rumbling when they did rocket engine testing. Was a site to see and feel. Unfortunately, the ground around this facility is still contaminated from the nuclear reactor melt down they had in the fifties I believe and all the chemicals they used.

I remember hearing all about Rocketdyne a bunch. I was born in LA and spend most of my early life down there. Would see the rocket trails from the ones launched out of vandenberg. The colors right after sunset where also neat to see

Those Saturn V F-1 engines where on another level. Would have loved to witness a launch. But I wasn't even a twinkle yet when they where in use. So far, nothing we have today has eclipsed the raw power those engines put out. Still amazing to see video and clips of the lift off. I guess the next best thing might be the Artemis or space X starship. But somehow I think they just won't have the same impact

"In the dark of the Valley" is a good movie documenting what happened and the coverup about the Santa Susana Field Laboratory accident. They say this was a worse accident than Three Mile Island.
