Strange issue after a few upgrades, EGT spike!

Purchased this truck about 2 months ago, 2004.5 3500 LT3 DRW 4X4 CCLB. The truck came with a cat back 5", Edge Evolution, Banks Ram Air. I have a pretty heavy camper (~4300lbs loaded), my first trip with the truck the way it came, I was noticing EGT's creeping up and having a hard time keeping things below 1300. Wanting to protect my investment and keep the truck cooler, I installed a Mishimoto intercooler and hot side pipe, S&B turbo inlet, LB7 front pipe (cat delete) and a 3" downpipe.

Took the camper out again this weekend and had two instances of EGT's spiking to 1500+ degrees. Both times, I wasn't under a ton of load and had to almost completely back off and feather the throttle to keep the EGT's down to get me to the side of the road. I let the truck idle for a few minutes, shut it off, cycled power to the tuner, got back on the road without further issue. The first time I was using the Tow program the second time I was using the stock program. Other than these two isolated instances the truck worked great, EGT's were down around 1000-1100.

Any insight as to what might be happening is greatly appreciated.

1300 doesn't sound hot to me. How long was it at 1500? I forgot the exact number, but I thought it was something like 1475° was the rating of the turbo for continuous operation. And short duration of 1600° or something like that. Someone here will probably have the correct numbers

But basically high EGT is from lack of air (too much fuel for the guven air) and or reduced timing.

Might need to log the mm3, main timing, boost and maf to see if anything looks off

Thanks for the reply. I'll log values on my scanner on my trip this weekend.

Are you using the CTS2 or3 for your gauges? For sure log those things but it could be the egt probe going bad. Edges egt probes are known to suck lol. Something to think about.

Still thinking out loud, you shouldn’t have had to pull off the road to get the egts down. Just lifting the throttle a little will do it. I bet the probe is bad.

Step 1, install a better quality probe/gauges. The edge probes are known to be piss poor quality.
-This will depend on if you want a screen/OBD info or just vital gauges. On the OBD side you're limited to an Edge Insight CS3/CTS3 being an LLY.
If you want pillar gauges I only recommend ISSPRO or Auto Meter. They're more $$ but are the highest quality you can get.

Step 2, ditch the evolution tuning and get a quality efilive tune or even stock tuning. Your truck will be much happier for it. I don't think this is the root cause of your EGT issues, I 1000% believe you have the classic bad probe issue as the symptoms are identical to it.

Agree 100%. If it’s as old as it is, it still plugs into the bale connectors under the hood. I’m surprised it still works. Lots of troubles with the getting hot and shutting the truck off. Happened to 3 different ones when I had the juice/attitude on my first truck.

Agreed. With as cheap as EFILive tuning can be obtained these days it also makes no sense to put anything else into these trucks as multiple dealers do bench flashing etc to help cut costs.
