2001 duramax. I was driving down the road and all off a sudden a wierd vibration noise started that only happened when i pressed on the pedal. I have a BAD rear u-joint that makes all kinds of weird noises ( squeak, slight pop, crunching down type noise) so i kept driving thinking it was that and ready to go ( of course 1.5 hours from home). then all off a sudden my truck went into limp mode. I cleared it and tried to move forward and it did for a few feet then slipped back into limp mode. I get out of the truck and i have a MASSIVE amount of fluid on the ground. looked a little closer and seems to be coming from between the trans and transfer case. Looks like there is a adapter between or maybe its the tail housing? But anyways you can see its running from the top of trans and its not just a drip, im talking a stream. Any ideas what kind of repair im looking at? Im having all kinds of trouble with this truck and ive only owned it since july.

Sorry to hear about your troubles. As you are in Michigan I would recommend getting a replacement adapter from Merchant Automotive in Zeeland MI. They are Duramax specialists and can do repairs for you if needed. Sadly you most likely will have to buy a new one as used ones are not typically in circulation.

after researching it looks like that bad u-joint just took out the tail housing from vibration..

Yep, happens quite often with bad u-joints. And is why GM had the tailhousing changed later on, and again here recently went with a whole new style of adapter housing and bolt pattern all together.

It shouldnt be terrible but I think the trans needs to be pulled. From what I've heard it can be done in the truck but its diffucult to keep things lined up when re assembling.

it is eXtremely difficult to put that back in with the trans in the truck ....extremely recommend dropping the trans

It should DEFINATELY come out. Can it be done in the truck if your careful, yes. SHOULD it be done in the truck, HELL NO! The end play for the trans is set with shims that are installed between the output shaft and the bearing in the tailhousing. So when the housing is changed the end play for the trans must also be checked. The ONLY way to do this correctly is with the trans out of the truck so it can be turned straight up. This is why many have done the tail housing and had the trans grenade on them in less than 6 months because they didn't check the end play because they didn't pull the trans. It's your trans, but if you damage it from improper end play it WON'T be cheap to fix. Chances are you will be looking for a core trans for parts.
