LB7 Oil Pressure Flexing during Acceleration

2003 Chevy Silverado 3500 LB7

Oil pressure gauge goes from 120 to zero on acceleration and returns to normal after releasing the accelerator. I also get the warming signal.

The oil pressure reading via my Torque Pro and OBD2 adapter is normal through acceleration and stays normal during the entire drive time.

I recently purchase a rebuilt gauge cluster, and it seems to get worst the warmer the weather....

I think it is the step motor or a cold solder on the gauge.

Any suggestions?

On an 03? IMO, you're in the right direction. You[ve already shown the sending unit is functioning.

Those gauge stepper motors are known to act up and do weird stuff like that or get stuck. You can replace them yourself if you're handy with a soldering iron or there is places on ebay that do that for you.

Well, I changed out the step motor on the oil pressure gauge, and it is still dropping to zero upon acceleration. I think my next step is to chase the wires from the oil pressure senor to the ECM and see if I can find a short anywhere. I do have a new oil pressure senor that I can install too....

Since you say it's during acceleration, maybe the engine is torquing over and moving a broken wire enough to disconnect

It turns out it was the oil pressure sensor. I R&R it and my oil pressure is back to normal

Sorry to guide you the incorrect direction about the cluster. At least now you know how to do the bulbs and steppers, like most of us with 03-06s have done.

For future reference to anyone experiencing something similar. If you get a low oil pressure warning on the dash, that means the ECM is receiving a low oil pressure signal and sending that to the cluster. This could be from a wiring issue, faulty sending unit, or low oil pressure. A gauge can malfunction and display low oil pressure, but that will not trigger a warning on the dash.
