It’s fuel related.

Filler neck rusted in half.

Tons of water in the fuel.

I siphoned about 10 gallons of something that wasn’t gas out.

Put 5 gallons fresh fuel back in.

Still seeing water in fuel from test port on gage.

It tries to start, but won’t fully run.

So obviously I spent a couple hours messing with it.

Scan tool was seeing RPM and timing. At that point I was confident crank and cam position sensors were still in the game.

It will run on ether. I focused on the fuel system.

Fuel filler neck was rusted out. The way it was positioned under the front corner of the flat bed was a perfect pathway for rain run / snow melt to run in the fuel tank.

First couple fuel samples were more water than fuel. Not joking.

Fuel pressure is at 51psi. Fuel volume out of the gauge release is very low. Less than 2 ounces.

Fuel system performance has been compromised by the large percentage of water in the fuel.

So, is the pump bad or full of ice crystals? Truck has been sitting in a 45degree shop since Saturday, but the bed it still had 4" of snow on it. Has all the water / ice in the fuel had time to melt? Who knows.

I did siphon as much of the tank out as I could, then put (5) gallons fresh fuel back in. Sample still shows a bit of water.

Next question is the engine. Previous owner and his "mechanic" friends spent a fair bit of time trying to get it to run. Enough where there are signs of water in the oil. Injectors pushing water instead of fuel. How much damage has that water done just being in the cylinders? Stuck rings, pitted cylinder walls?

I guess next steps will be pull all the spark plugs and do a compression test, use a bore scope to get a visual on the walls.

The more I look, the worse it gets, but at the same time the more confident I am the milage really is 86,000.

Does that make it worth trying to save? 70/30 towards no.

Sadly, I think Brick may be right. If theres that much water and they ran it thru the engine, they couldve done a lot of damage. Hoping not.

I guess this thread could also be called, "I bought a snow plow setup, and got a truck with it for free".

Definitely the direction it's headed.

If it comes to that I'm in it $1600, I'll sell the flat bed for 600, tires for 300. And whatever else.

Keep the plow set-up and look for a more suitable GMT800.

If it runs on ether. It may not be getting actual fuel through the injectors. I would pull the rail with the injectors and see if any of them have an actual pattern. I am guessing they are going to be full of debris on the intake side though.

I will have to look, I might have a set of injectors. I know I have a few stock manifolds laying around.

Thanks, I'm going to order a cheap pump and fuel line kit, then get a better idea about the injectors. I do appreciate the offer.
I'd pull the plow on it and build a fire, but the other side of me says get some rock auto injectors/rails and a fuel pump and let it eat.
Same conversation I have with myself, multiple times a day.

Did I mention I need my head examined?

Good news is the flat bed is getting a lot of traffic on FB MP. Listed for $750, so the out-of-pocket cost of my mental imparities is coming down.

Even if you scrap the truck a running engine is worth more than non running. Same with the 4L80E.

If your replacing the pump, don't forget to get a retaining ring. I am sure that thing is crusty

Eh i wouldnt fret over the water it sprayed in there. Compression test would tell you for sure though.

Personally I’d get it running, run it hard and then check compression or dead holes.

As for AZ, im 2nd generation born/raised here. Great grand parents were on their way to cali from oklahoma (carter side) and stopped in Coolidge to make a few bucks before moving on. Calvin Coolidge (what the town was named after) had a bunch of federal grants going back then so they bought acerage and became cotton farms. Never left AZ lol.

Dont think ill ever leave. Has everything i want and the heat never bothered me. I live outside of phx so the 120* temps they post about isnt what i see at home. Usually 110*. But come sun down, it actually cools off. I can be 20+* cooler at my house than in phx just because of the heat bubble.

I mean… az is hot and terrible. Bad place to live

Flatbed is a hot item on the FB MP. Supposed to be sold this afternoon for $750. Three guys in line behind this guy, so I'm relatively confident it's gone.

As expected, all three-rear cross members are toast. Frame rails themselves shockingly still seems solid. Crossmembers are easy enough.

Exhaust / o2 sensors are the ones it was born with, as it the fuel pump.

Cheapo fuel pump / fuel line and filter kit arrive today from the jungle website. Should be able to see if it's a runner.

I will include cross member pictures so our friends not in the rust belt, can see what they are missing.
