Heads are off and in the plow truck to be dropped at the machine shop today, along with the valve seals from the kit.

Pistons looks fine, no cracks or evidence of blow by.

Couple questions about block prep. Watched a couple videos, most notable one from Ryans diesel service where they block sand the deck. This would seem to introduce a lot of debris into the lower end, lifter valley / cylinders. Is that actually a recommended procedure?

Have to double check the markings on my gaskets, but I'm pretty sure they are grade "A", not "C".

Broke one of the plastic hats on the injector return line and TONS of the Christmas trees with the zip tie top that hold the wiring harness to the engine block. I believe maybe 2 or 3 came out intact. The rest broke.

Engine was incredibly clean under the valve covers, that made me happy.

Now to decide if I want to upgrade the turbo while I'm in here.

Already has sportsman cp3, cold air and I/C piping. EGTs when pulling the loaded toy hauler up long grades do reach 1,400 briefly. Would be nice to get a little help with that.

Block and sand is old school and time consuming, still works, helps clean everything up, I'd use 300+ grit paper.
Or use a poly abrasive wheel like these

Found the Christmas tree zip ties as well.

Looks like I have to buy a complete Fuel return line, to get the (1) hat that broke.

Can't say I've every used them. I know the Mahle gaskets have never failed on me nor any customers. This also seems to be the trend across the industry as well.

With that track record I will not personally deviate.
I will be using Mahle and ARP studs.

After ANY machine operations, you need to make sure that block is absolutely clean in and out, oil galleries cleaned, threads chased, etc.

I think 50 grit may be a bit too abrasive. I personally use a high quality gasket scraper and flat stone as needed.

Subaru, via an old TSB, approved the white/120 grit version. I would personally look into that.

I've had good luck with 320 grit adhesive backed on a flat metal block to clean up the deck. Little toilet paper balls stuffed into all the holes and coolant passages. Crank rotated so pistons are below the deck and rags down the cylinders.

Vacuum out all the toilet paper and down the cylinders to clean out any abrasive that may have come off the paper
