A friend/customer of mine wants help with a 78 f250 bodied but 96 powerstroke zf5 chassis/drivetrain. We are doing a new long block and will be getting new turbo and injectors. Does anyone know a decent recipe for these old trucks? I havent seen it yet, im not sure if its been intercooled or not but we def should consider that too. Maybe a shop recommendation that specializes in these things?

Yeah I've got some experience in them on various customer builds and my own OBS 97 I had.

What's the goal or what's going on with it?

Is this thing bone stock? The list below assume it's bone stock. I have done probably 2 dozen or so with the recipes below and ALWAYS been happy with them. Personally I like to run a 364.5/80/0.91 and 238/100% for my goals. There isn't any "downside" that I've found to this combo and it'll make one hell of a fun driving 7.3 that can do anything. Essentially this is like stock fuel/air/built trans 01-16 Duramax HP levels.

425-475whp:
1) E-fuel (I like Beans and Irate systems)
2) 203/30% or 238/100% (my preference is 238/100%)
3) S364.5/80/0.91 (great up to ~500-525whp) w/intercooler
4) Plenum upgrade
5) Tuning
6) Decent clutch
7) Head studs
8) Valve springs
9) Pushrods
10) If he needs an HPOP he could run an Adrenaline

500-550whp:
1) E-fuel (I like Beans and Irate systems)
2) 205-250cc/80-100% (hard to go wrong with a 238/100%)
3) S364.5/80/0.91 (great up to ~500-525whp) w/intercooler, 366/80/0.91 for 550-575hp, 369/80/1.00 for 550-600whp
4) Plenum upgrade
5) Tuning
6) Decent clutch
7) Head studs
8) Valve springs
9) Pushrods
10) Adrenaline HPOP recommended, new stock 17deg may hold up

650whp+:
1) E-fuel (I like Beans and Irate systems)
2) 350cc/200%
3) 366/80/0.91 for 550-575hp, 369/80/1.00 for 550-600whp, S467/83 for 550-750whp (AR depends on HP level)
4) Plenum upgrade
5) Tuning
6) Decent clutch
7) Head studs
8) Competition valve springs
9) Competition pushrods
10) Adrenaline HPOP
11) Upgraded IDM is ideal

Probably going to limit it to a turbo, injectors, clutch, and intercooler(assuming it's already not)

I'm under the impression that pretty much any power increase on the 7.3 should include head studs. Brad can likely confirm their necessity. I've already read that this was a weak area of the engine

When adding power on a 73L valvetrain upgrades are critical. My personal truck picked up ~70hp by simply doing springs/pushrods because it kept floating valves with a 366.

Head studs I recommend for anything with the ability to make 450whp area. Realistically this setup should have studs.

We are doing a choate reman, the one with head studs. I might call them about possible spring & pushrods. This trucks just going to get an injector & turbo(drop in) kit from full force. And an intercooler.

I have 2 friends with the 99-03 7.3L trucks.

RIffraff Diesel is also a good parts house/ manufacture for 7.3L

KC Turbo's seem to work well. These guys have the riffraff up pipe replacements and the KC TOW max stage 1. The Up pipes were junk and leak form the factory. Not sure on the earlier version if that's also an issue.

My one friend purchased the upgraded fuel line's from Riffraff that supply more fuel.
