I know they make several different grades on "high strength" heat treated steels. With the frames being 10+ years old, I would be a bit cautious to weld on them as some of the older ones required special procedures followed by stress relieving. You would need to know what the material is and what strength it has to pick the correct filler material.
I know shops weld on them, but welding can be a crack waiting for a place to start. If you look at most of the frames even the multi channel ones, the big stress items are riveted or bolted on to them. Rivets and bolts allow for minor flex that would result in fatigue failures for welds.
