First, I am not sure if this is the right spot to post this question.

I am about to buy an 05 Duramax LLY and just found a good deal on an 06. The biggest difference I can see is the 6 speed allison. Is there a huge difference in the trannies? or the truck for that matter? I read about the better hp/tq numbers for the 06, but with tuning, maybe the 05 is a better platform. (?)

I will be towing a 50' race trailer at about 18K pounds.

All 06's are LBZ's mechanically only difference is tuning..

I thought some of the early 06 models were LLY's designations with LBZ tuning in them?
Or was I pissed or stoned when I heard that?

Renntag I would say go with the 06 and 6 speed. But then again I am a little biased:rolleyes:

no sir you are correct there where some 06 LLy s the 6 speed would be my choice but if you get the lly you can get a dsp switch for on the fly tune changes. if you will be towing mostly then get the 6 speed imo

The 6 speed is a little beefier from the factory. The front rotating assembly has some changes that really helps it out. I vote for the 06 over the 05. Overall it really is better.

As far as the 06 LLY goes. They are mechanically the same as an LBZ. They just have different programming in the ECM, but you can easily make up for that (I have an 06 LLY).
