There's so many tq limiting parameters in the big calibration of the 6.7 Cummins its not even funny. If GM puts a solid 850lb-ft through all the gears it'll out tow the Rams.

I read somewhere that max torque in the rams is only there for a very brief rpm window in first and second gears.

I've said this for years now. With the technology we have now, I see no reason they couldn't build a diesel that doesn't need but say an EGR and cat, and make it meet emissions. Yes it would be a step back in power, but I bet it would sell like hot cakes if it didn't have a DPF and no DEF. Look at how many trucks DODGE sold because they didn't need DEF when FORD and GM did.

The 900ft lbs figure Ram claims on the 2016 is almost as big of a joke as VW claiming their 2.0 TDI meets EPA emissions regs.
Dyno the Ram. If it makes an honest solid ~725ft lbs at the wheels (900ft lbs with 20% drivetrain loss) through all the gears, Ill eat my shorts. The engine might make 900ft lbs when run on an engine dyno, but put it in a truck with all of the defueling, transmission/TCM torque limiting, acceleration weight, calculated load, etc....and you'll see that "900 ft lbs" drop off like a rock.
Plus their trans will never hold that TQ.
Why don't they just drop the 6.6 (detuned) into the 1/2 ton? My guess is that the mileage would be as good or better than the current gasoline offerings with all the torque you would ever need. Call it a heavy half. For 90% of what I do a half ton would work better, but when I need power and don't have it I go crazy. Hence my 3/4 ton diesels. I'd love to have the ride of a half ton with the power of my lb7 duramax.
My guess is it would likely impact 3/4 ton sales too much plus it's a heavy engine so their payload would be hurt as well. They need a small light diesel for the half ton like the ecodiesel has.
I believe in time it will come depending on how Colorado sales go.
There is talk about resurrecting the 4.5 sine so much testing has already been done on it.

They are going to pull their heads out of the asses? I couldn't believe they shelved it in the first place, look how well ram is doing with the eco diesel 1500. GM already missed a shit load of sales...
Ever think thats why GM is making the HD line "larger" now? Sort of following the Ford line of thinking, make the 3/4-1 ton trucks physically larger so as to create a definite separation between them and the 1/2 tons?
As it is, GM sure blew it on the 1/2 ton diesel. Went from the potential to be first to bringing up the rear.
The 4.5 would have never gotten the fuel economy that the Ram ecodiesel gets. With the 2015+ direct injected V6 and V8 gassers that GM offers, the 4.5 would have BARELY offered a fuel economy advantage (over the gassers).
Add on the $3-4k+ (??) price tag, more expensive maintenance, and more expensive to fix once warranty is up, im not surprised they shelved it.
To compete with Ram, the 4.5 would have to get 29+ mpg. No way in hell it was going to do that. The 2.8 Colorado gets "only" 31mpg I think.
The 4.5 was too close to the 6.6 in capability, weight, economy to be viable and sway buyers I think.
Plus CAFE requirements etc...
Its a shame, but from a numbers point it just doesnt make sense if you break it down and actually think about it...especially with the Colorado 2.8 out now, considering the Colorado really isnt THAT much smaller than a half ton Silverado.
How about the fact GM PAID FIAT to design and build the 3.0L ECODIESEL for THEM! GM doesn't want that tidbit getting out that they paid FIAT to design and build the 3.0L ECODIESEL that is now in the RAM when they were partnered with them. It was designed and spec for the EUROPEAN market for the ESCALADE. GM dropped the engine AFTER FIAT had completed it, and released all rights to it becuase they felt the diesel would never catch on, and it was a losing concept. Now try that one on for pulling there heads out of there posterior.

A short ways down it talks about the 3.0L FIAT diesel that is currently in the RAM and GRAND having been a GM/FIAT joint venture. I read about it years ago when diesel cars and trucks were out selling gas something like 3 to 1 in Europe. I got a tad excited but alas GM bailed on it.
My guess 420/900 and same look as 2016 half tons
