my twist on a aux oil cooler

with the temps runing north of 80* it adds some 15-20* to the oil temps to about 215-220* enough to raise ECT to bring the fan on. with last week hauling a 7500lb load of skylights from atlanta to fort worth some 800 miles. i had an avg of 15-20mph head wind the whole time.. couple with a very un aerodynamic load really puts a load on the engine.. i ran I20 the whole way.. and its relatively FLAT. i cruised about ~65mph speed limit was 70-75mph. i avg 8.4mpg, ECT was 195-200* OT was ~245 the whole time...
the goal was something simple some what modular and would pull ~30-40* out of the oil putting the oil temp around 190*.

list of what i bought.
6 1/2"npt to -10
4 -10 straight hose
2 -10 90* hose
15' of bradied -10 line from jegs
11x11" B&M ultra cooler #70274
moroso remote mount filter #23750.
and a spin on adapter from derale..
and a 10" fan that i have left over from a cooler/fan setup that the cooler took a shit on me.. rate at 500cfm @ 4amps. this will be wired through a temp switch in the third boss on the remote filter mount.. i can upgrade to a 1000cfm 10" fan if need be.. i made the bracket with the possibility in mine that i might need to add another cooler for the engine oil.. i will plumb the coolers in a serires with the oil entering the back of the stack and working its what forward as it cools off.. also thinking about moving the fuel cooler to the stack as well..

Oddly reminiscent thread.

Plan on 15 gpm at 3200 rpm, Mike. -10 is not enough if expected to handle full flow without excessive restriction.

found this barried in the oil cooling thread

Hope that cooler can flow 16+ GPM :eek:

with that stated outside doing burnouts when i just got the truck complete a year ago.. its never been above 3000rpm

just talked with B&M they said they will flow upwards of 20gpm with no problem

I would use the fan as a puller instead of a pusher.

the fan is designed and setup for pushing..it was part of a fran/tranny cooler package i had on my 75 chevy.. that cooler died with a tree branch and the fan survived..

i used what i had.. normally i'd it setup with a puller..

I would add a stand pipe on the inlet fitting to help disperse the oil across the cooler more evenly. I ran one of the B&M coolers for my trans cooler, and it was always ice cold on top even with tranny temps in the 220 range. Only the bottom 1/3rd of it ever really got warm from oil flow. I swapped over to an EARLS super cooler and the trans temps dropped almost 35 degrees going down the road.

how was your cooler mounted? fittings down, up, or to the side? i know BM says to mount fitting up or to the side.. i'd speculate to help get the air out kinda same reason why you dont mount a spin on filter facing down..grannted my secondary tranny cooler is fittings down.. its +/- 3* from fitting end to closed end.. but it is nowhere near the size of this one

i'll keep an eye on it tho :thumb:

going to swap the spin on adapter from the derale to the hamburger one i posted.. so it will be next weekend before i get everything plumbed, since i plan on rolling out tomorrow..

Nice! Interested to see how she does under there.
since i have little too no bed on the truck.. saddle tank and a 48" tool box runing with the frame there is a lot of air the comes up behind the cab at least thats what is depicted when i am running the rain. the cooler is roughly even with the rear cab mounts. also i got ride of the inframe oem dual tanks logn time ago..

i wanted a tube/fin serpentine cooler but packing size, price and tube size i couldnt find one.. the advantage of this style over plate/fine or header style is 100% of the fluid is going through 100% of the cooler regardless of flow rate. where as plate/fin or header style you risk getting what you describe due to fluid likes to flow path of least resistance.. in short it never flow 100% of the fluid through 100% of the cooler 100% of the time.

got everything installed and plumbed.. changed the fan/cooler setup its puller now with a bigger fan still 10* but rated at 1000cfm vs the 500cfm i was going to use... when i bench ran the cooler/fan setup the air flow wasnt what i was hoppign for.. used the hambergurer 3321 with -12 O ring to -10 fittings. truck was due for an oil change this weekend as well.. the system added 2qts..

the B&M cooler heats pretty even top to bottom and puts off alot of heat just sitting on the jackstands at high idle (1200rpm) while i was checking for leaks. the truck sat at high idle for better part of 30 minutes ect/ot never went above 150* normally it would go right up to 180* in 75* weather. kinda liking that :D

i also swapped a -10 straight for a 45* and add and 90* elbow.
i have not hooked the fan up yet. going to run it with and on/off toggle for now.

i will get pictures up tomorrow

heres the cooler and and oil filter.. should get a load today... see hot is works then from running around yesterday.. i saw an increase of about 5psi in oil pressue... my gues to the oil being colder

If u look it has to go throught the cooler all the time. He didn't use a oil sandwich adapter. I haven't found a sandwich adapter that has -12 an fittings.
