300k on this pump, with a fresh regulator stuck in it, time to update.. My history with CP3 failures, wasn't much question when the guts are laying in the valley. But I have seen another Lb7 that did exact same as this one. Runs great, won't hold 14k rail, still driving last I knew.

On the injectors, I had a buddy hit me up about no rail pressure on LMM month back. He capped off the rails, removing 7 injectors, after testing the pump alone to prove it was good. Out of all 8 sticks, was the very last injector, returning so much fuel it wouldn't make 1000psi cranking. Told him don't buy a lottery ticket anytime soon.. Someone had just replaced all 8 sticks few weeks before.

For the VAC reading, my GM buddy said if 7-10" but holds good rail, then not a big issue. But over 7" and low rail, is considered restricted and typically that's resolved before looking elsewhere.

If was anything but LB7, I have enough spare return fittings on my bench, to stick all 8 lines in separate bottles and solve it right quick. But every time I look at an LB7, it brings back images of my 6.0L Powerstoke top end spread accross the shop floor..

Received word yesterday from my never met a guy so dang happy to no longer be working on greasy trucks every day ex-GM Dmaster tech,, that the new LBZ mod pump is installed. And she held 160mpa rail on command first fire... Answering that months long questions once and for all.. PUMP !

Except for the fact he also said, wait till ya see this pile of junk, dry rotted, and completely wrong size pieces of hose someone stuck onto this fuel system.. And he hadn't driven it yet to check the vac side and see if still restricted. But he also noted someone had been under both valve covers, as noted by the black RTV they used..

Can't wait to see how she runs with fuel and boost.

P.S. The regulator seemed to been OEM. But the engine has a lot of Yellow paint marks on it...

Picked up the old girl last Saturday. She's got rail again

After my buddy drove it home, I was gonna hook up the scanner and take it for a test drive. He decided to hook up the dump trailer, and drag 5 tons of gravel up his long, steep and heavily rutted out from the rain driveway. Twice.. Decided the scanner wasn't really needed...

Got a chance to haul a couple of loads with this old gem last weekend. Much respect for invention of VGT.. Even knowing it has kryptonite tierods, she was bouncing the front a couple of times where CV's and U-joint age was starting to come up in my gear-head.. Long ways back down this hill. Here's a ride up half of it.

Today I'm starting to recall why I've never been a big LB7 fan. Owning a 6Leaker for 8 years, while also owing an LLY in the boat, made me realize how much better the common rail was compared to the PS HPOP. For the basic reason that Step 1 in every fuel system problem didn't start with remove the valve covers, and find the leak. Unless ya own an LB7..

The old girl is still running great. But seems to be thinining out the motor oil now in under a hundred miles.. Apeared out of the blue after the the CP3 swap.. Oil pressure low, couple extra quarts on the stick. Changed oil, 75psi cold idle, 100 miles later, 25psi cold start... Dang it...

Its a 22 year old truck with no known history on it. Not surprising. Set of SAC00's should fix that right up, if its injectors. Considering you said a while back that someone had been under the covers, it could simply be an hp line leaking, too.

Oh I know. That unknown history is constantly showing signs someone with unknown skills was chasing fuel problems on this far longer than I have been.. And what looked like a good deal for a southern truck, is quickly eating up it's value in repair costs.

Find it strange it only starts leaking after the CP3 LBZ upgrade. Pulled a camper 1000 miles when only 10k PSI rail, no fuel in oil. Replace the CP3, and now it's leaking further down the line. Verified it will hold 23k PSI on the rail just off idle with a scantool.

So new question is, rusty line on injector, return line issue, or did it crack an injector body?⁉️

NC is more-than-likely right, but there's only one way to find out for sure.....

Hopefully its just a HP line fitting leaking. Doesnt cost anything to throw a wrench on the fittings outside the covers.

Had two on passenger side that took a good 1/4 turn, and one on drivers took another 1/8th.. Swapped out the oil and put a fresh 10 miles on it so far.

I've worked on some vehicles over the years, and found things that makes ya really wanna meet that last person who worked on it. Without letting them know you have examined their work of course.. I must meet this person before I die ...

Everything that can leak, does leak, PCV pump included. FICM vent plug, WHY ?? ?

Think I have couple of of those on my desk.
That's a reman FICM. Why remove the plug?? If curiosity can kill a cat, this truck had 9 lives at one point..
Probably an indication of the work that was done...I am guessing the FICM and the fuel issues took atleast 2 of the 9...?

By the trail of new vs old parts, IE those with paint marker numbers vs those without or plum worn out.. This boneyard engine has had the head off once. Has the new Silver Oxide coated head bolts, which was a much later introduction to the GM parts bin. According to my GM professor.
So now question becomes, did it ever hold proper rail pressure after they did head gaskets? Or was CP3 bad when they pulled the heads? Chicken or Egg ??;

Biggest concern now, oil pressure hovering around the 17psi mark warm idle according to the CTS in the truck. Spikes 80+ cold, holds a good 40+ at cruise, but she ain't cracking the piston squirts open at idle. Gonna break out the old analog rig to verify.. And still sucking air somewhere on the suction side of the fuel system.. 48hrs, 5 pumps to fire.

Thinking we rate this one, 5 of 9 lives?

How old are the main fuel lines coming to engine? Look original to truck?
Look Original. I've yet to crawl under it personally, but one I hacked out the kink from above, was definitely what came on the truck.

On a good note, fired it up again today for about 30 minutes to charge batteries, oil pressure was 75 at 75F, and only dropped to 50 at 160ish when I shut it down. So that encouraging.. Oil not raising on the stick yet, but still only 10 actual driving miles. So I'm going to dig up my old analog gauge and adapter, and verify this shady engine wiring isn't also impacting our main line values. Haven't trusted the dash in this truck since day one. And I noticed the wiring at the bail connectors looked pretty ripe for that known oil sending unit issue from those years.

Truck is a master class on known Duramax issues.. LOL
Recently ruled out the chime module, aftermarket head unit, and the drivers seat control module from what's killing the batteries every 24hrs. Was gonna start a new thread on that topic alone...

Check the alternator for the battery drain. I had a similar issue years ago, and finally found that one of the circuits in the alt malfunctioned. New alt, no more dead batteries.

I asked about the main fuel lines bc on northern trucks, its possible they can develop rust inside the hard line connectors, which opens the connection just enough to allow air intrusion.

Heck, the way you describe the work done on this truck....it could be anything.

That rust is exactly what I was told it could been also. Being a southern truck, it was amazing clean around them. Like couple years, maybe since they been out. Up to 100 miles now, no fuel smell or raise on the stick yet. Hot idle still sucks on the gauge, while running RotellaT to flush it. But I'm hopeful we caught it early enough.
