Compound Turbo Oil Drain Leak

I’ve had a small oil leak/weap coming from my box stock S480 for awhile. I have a newer HSP kit that I bought used from a guy that had it over the stock turbo with stock fuel. It hasn’t been abused and it’s tight. I’ve put almost 10k miles in it. The kit has a -12an male drain that I have necked down to a -10 draining to the top of the oil pan near the starter.

I replaced the gasket but upon disassembly it looked alright I added a smidge of RTV around the drain hole. Put 30 miles on it and it looks like it’s leaking again. Possibly out of the exhaust v band. When I took the turbo out I didn’t see any oil in the exhaust or intake.

PCV is dumped to the atmosphere. Any tips or preferred gaskets your guys are using? The self undercoating of the frame rail was a nice feature during the winter but the drips in the driveway are getting old. Thanks for the help.

I used the Power Driven Diesel drain gasket (10720154140) the last time I swapped turbos and its the only one that hasn't leaked on me.

If the turbo is leaking at the vband no drain gasket will help your issue. At that point you either have a turbo that needs a rebuild or a turbo with too small of a drain.

Being a box stock borg warner unit I would venture to say it's likely needing a rebuild as borg doesn't use the high flow aftermarket bearings.

If it's leaking at the drain flange you'll see it clear as day.

You are likely correct that it needs to be rebuilt. Maybe a good excuse to buy a bigger one? Although at some point I need to take the fan shroud off and tap the front of the upper oil pan for a -12 drain.

There honestly is nothing wrong with draining it near the starter. That is how WCFab and SDP intend on people doing it. HSP tends to drain in front of the engine.

Realistically you've got a great setup to make 800-850whp with phenomenal street manners. A billet S480/96 (box borg is cast unless it's an SXE unit) will typically have better response and make more average HP as the aftermarket billet wheels are significantly lighter than borg's.

No doubt. It is fun to drive. More than enough power to get you in trouble. It needs a bigger injection pump first before another turbo. I have found the limits of the 10mm.

I believe that! If/when you choose to upgrade I may be willing to take the pump on trade towards a new pump so keep me in mind! My tow rig needs a pump.

I would love to trade but unfortunately I have a 10mm CP4. I think you would be the first to swap a CP3 for a CP4

Why would anyone create a bigger grenade like that?
The truck had a stock exhaust for a long time. I wanted to take full advantage of the drop in turbo 6 years ago when I bought the pump. At the time the ninth injector CP3 kits only had stock pumps. Hindsight is always 20/20.
