Looking forward to the next build thread :D

In all seriousness though I hope this one lasts

I've given speculation on generally what I'd build....

Currently with Ductile iron rings.. I'm increasing ptwc .001" per ~35,000 miles. With said rings...
With service limit of .010" and just over .007" usable.. assuming you start fresh with ptwc at mid .002X" it would be ~250,000 mile service for cylinder walls...

Logic reason would state.. SS rings would have a higher wearing of the walls.. or lower mileage per .001" wear.. how fast???.. idk haven't don't it yet...

I'm looking are sleeves as well, I currently don't know how the block stacks against, Ductile iron and tool steel in with say a SS ring..
Not saying in going to go that route.... Just want to be informed on various options

Well stock rings from factory are SS and the bore on this 200k Lbz I just had was 4.0554 before honing. My bore on my truck at time of rebuild was 4.0557 before honing and that was 160k on the clock. So something not adding up as to the cyl wear.

Wonder if there's a coating/hardening below the obvious?
Duty cycle of the engine?
CR? 16.8 vs 17.5?
Mine went from 4.095 to just over 4.097 with chrome faced Ductile iron rings and 70K
..

Well, the cyl hardening may actually be affected since it was bored over. Maybe that plays a part. The fact the rings wore so fast may also be the reason. Them wearing means lots of metal on metal contact with not much oil between them.

Knowing the 2nd ring was carboned up.. oil ring was better..as in not stuck in the Grove... Should've looked more closely at it.... I was more focused on rings 1 and 2. If it was carboned up as well. It would restrict oil to the cylinder walls and encourage bare contact

What was your ring gap again? The increased carbon build up could also be amplified by the fact the rings were worn out. Obviously as they wear out, more blow by, higher the chance to gum up and then compound the issue. Kinda why I feel those rings are an issue over the 41206

Can you run ring free in diesels? I use it in outboards regularly and that stuff really works.
Idk first I've heard of it.... You actually running with no rings?

New fresh bore gaps where .017-.018 top and .023 2nd
After 70k top was .023 2nd was .024

Fresh rings gaps are back in the .018/.023 range

Ring free is a product that loosens the carbon buildup on rings allowing them to reseat. Commonly used on two stroke outboards.

It works, marine motors are stupid bad to get build up. I guess from the extensive idling. I know we never shut them down, ever. Even on 36hr offshore trips. A good 85mph plus run for the last mile in the intercostal does help to blow most of the carbon out though:D

Which ones?

408737 now.. i have to look and see at what mileage I'd re ringed... I know fresh compression all 8 where 450psi +/-5
Pull random GP #5...it's 500psi... When guage stops moving after 8 pulses.

GP little weak.. hard starting in below 30°... think I need to clean the buses bar for the main cable
Edit found re-ringed mileage 331200 or roughly 77,000 miles on it to date

Just read through all of this, Adam... You told me how bad it was, but golly, I cringed every time you had another problem. Not sure I would have stuck with the truck as long as you did... One major breakdown was enough for me, let alone what you went through... I'd be interested in pictures of the ovals after you had 100k on them. Seems none of the pictures in the thread are working anymore... Thanks for the heads up on the SS ring set...

I'm hoping that freightmutt of yours treats you better once you get it going...

I got pictures somewhere but can't find them right not..
Truck is about to roll 420,000. That would put mileage around 180,000, basically 200,000 minus the mileage put on the junkyard lbz
Current rings are about done.. but I'm trying to hold off to get $$ scraped up to get the mechanical stuff done on the frieghtmut, really need trans, re-gear and shortened driveshaft, another $8-9000.00, plus what ever the 8.3 needs

Here's what they looked like with ~100k on them on the year down back in July 2016

Been keeping up with what you have done to the hot shot truck over the past couple of years.

Would have been a good test (probably would have caused issues though) to have a standard piston in there to compare.

You ever think about bringing the compression ratio back up a bit? Wonder if bringing it up to about 18:1 would help with mileage?
