Hello everyone,

I just bought my first Duramax yesterday, a 2001 GMC Sierra LB7 with 182,000 miles. I’m loving the truck so far. It has a few small things to address, but the big issue is the injectors. It’s showing the classic LB7 symptoms: fuel in the oil and white exhaust smoke.

I currently have the truck in the shop getting looked over while I prepare to tackle the injector replacement myself. I’m trying to figure out the best bang for your buck injector option. I’m not interested in the cheapest injectors out there if they’re junk. I only want to do this job once but I also don’t need top of the line “made of gold” injectors either. I have seen they can easly get pricy.

I’m looking for recommendations on:
  • Brands to trust
  • New vs remanufactured injectors
  • Vendors you’ve had good luck with
  • Discount codes or sales would be greatly appreciated
I’d also welcome any tips or advice from those who have done LB7 injectors themselves things you wish you knew beforehand, parts I should replace while I’m in there.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome

Reach out to one or more of the venders on this site for injector quotes. That will help keep this site going.

Also look into SAC style injectors. They are known for lasting much longer then the original style did.

If you've worked on engines before or know how to use a wrench, injectors are pretty straight forward. If you don't replace the high pressure lines, make sure to clean them well. Inside and out paying particular attention to the sealing area. Some do a CLR soak to remove the rust. Others use an ultrasonic cleaner. While a number will just replace them. Weight the options

Another point is the socket cap screws that hold the valve covers on. They are made of a soft steel and strip out easy. Especially when the hex hole is filled with debris and you don't get the wrench down deep enough. Some replace them with regular hex bolts.

Hoses and wiring loom will be old and dry rotted. They will crumble and split on you when moving them out of the way. Now is a good time to replace the fuel hoses and rewrap the harness. You'll curse yourself later if you don't do it now and have to replace a hose on the side of the road shortly after

If you run into trouble, just post up the questions and we can help

Is your goal to find the best bang for the buck OEM output or increased output injector? IE what are your overall goals/usage for the truck long term?

Personally I have a few thoughts on LB7 injectors.

1) Bosch injectors are honestly pretty darn good. I've gotten consistent decent life out of them on customers and personal vehicles.
2) SAC nozzles are superior and tend to last longer. I've had a few S&S failures over the last few years but I'm hopeful they are isolated to specific batches and not a result of them growing.
3) Buy from a quality brand (OEM Bosch, Dynomite Diesel, Exergy, LDS, S&S, Flux) and don't look back.

My go to injectors for factory output are genuine Bosch (VCO), Dynomite Diesel "Eco" series (VCO), S&S "Torquemaster" (VCO), S&S SAC00 (SAC), and Exergy "Sportsman" (VCO).

My go to injectors for increased output is primarily Dynomite but you also can't go wrong with Exergy, S&S, LDS, or Flux.

Thank you for the helpful tips and advice on completing the job. I still plan on doing this myself, but my goal is to keep the truck stock, simple, and reliable.

I’ve been looking into SAC injectors since they seem to have a good reputation and long service life.

SAC00 are probably the most common injector I sell for LB7 followed by a 60%-100% sets. Let me know if I can help!

I went with SAC00s from S&S Diesel Motorsport direct. I had two go bad, but S&S sent me a whole new set of eight under warranty. Ask to make sure that return line banjo seals come with them. I went with SAC00s as I don’t need the increased horsepower. I attached 3 PDFs on how to R&R the injectors. I got them from one of the Duramax forums I just remember which one. I took me 3 days to do, I would stop when I got tried so I didn’t make any mistakes.
