I spoke with the shop that did my heads.

Another shop in Detroit that does turbos for a lot of different applications.

Consensus was I was replacing a “zero balance “ wheel or neutral balance with another neutral balance wheel.

They don’t balance in those situations.

Superior actually said I could bring it in and for $150 they balance it. Then they said I’d be wasting $150.

That is some horrible machining. How does anyone not check their work, esp on something as close-tolerance like a turbo wheel to housing???

Talk about BS. Yes they’re component neutral balanced but that never implies they can skip assembly balancing.

I’d that was the case, every turbo builder would be skipping this step and every quality builder doesn’t, including Dans. Their complete turbos come with a high speed balance sheet in the box.

My experience working at an OEM R&D facility says put it on and run it. Yes they're balanced separately, and yes most builders check the assembly. If each component is done correctly then the assembly will be correct as well. We use to swap comp wheels all the time on Holsets for testing, you can't guarantee the comp wheel to turbine position anyway so it's a non issue IMO

With a non-integrated nut wheel there is quite a bit of variance but the integrated nut unit “should” find the same location each time when torqued to the same spec at roughly the same temperature.

Granted this is what my brain tells me from other types of systems not specifically turbochargers.

Tom, don’t mistake my grinder marks for machining from the vendor.

First grinds always look a bit rough.

You are just trying to remove material in the beginning.

Here’s a picture of what it looked like before any grinding. The small nicks are where the wheel was interfering with the cover.

My buddy dropped his batmo wheel when we were about to install it, it broke a tiny piece of one of the wings off. He was devastated untill my mechanic pulled a balancer out and clipped off a similar piece off the opposite end and installed it. That was 11 years ago and the turbo is still going strong. I thought it was going to blow up the first time we hit it. I think people over think this.

Quick update. DDP is refunding $250 for the issues I had with the cover. Fair in my mind.

Motor is buttoned back up. Chasing a couple odds and ends parts wise yesterday, (turbo coolant line banjo fitting seals, the MAHLE kit had (3) for the oil lines but only (10 for coolant.)

But it's ready for the cab to come back down.

I will only have a few minutes shop time this evening, probably spend that giving everything one more thorough going over, before setting the cab down.

Truck is back together.

Start up was not drama free. Try as I did to go slow and make sure everything was done correctly, the oil feed line at the top of the turbo never got properly tightened up.

I didn’t notice it immediately as I was looking for fuel leaks at all the connections.

It pumped enough oil in the valley of the engine to cause concerns that I had also neglected to tighten the drain back line.

Long story, but in the end I was able to verify the drain line was properly tightened up and the continued oil dripping was just residual from the feed line.

Big job, but I think it is good to go now.

Plow truck has developed a coolant leak. So, the big girl is back to daily driving duties until I can fix the plow truck.

LML is running fine very happy with it other than it is very difficult to start.

Beginning to regret installing the glow plugs that came in the kit. Diesel RX brand.

I believe I am going to re install the ones that were in it.

Only codes are P0615.
