head gasket issues after water pump replacement?

I took my 2007 Subaru for a just in case timing belt replacement, and the water pump was replaced also. The shop found brown stuff in coolant, flushed it twice, cleared it, but shop manager warned me that the head gasket was probably blown due to the replaced water pump creating seal, thus increasing pressure which gave the engine fluid from broken head gasket nowhere to go but into the radiator. Sucks. I wish he'd anticipated that and replaced the gasket while he had the engine apart. :(

If water pump is bad (impeller slip) and engine is overheating, I'd think that could lead to bad head gaskets.

If head gaskets are bad and cooling system is overpressure, that would put extra wear on the water pump shaft seal.

I have put 2 water pumps on my LLY. The 2nd one was the performance one, welded impeller to prevent slipping. 3+ yrs running. The stock replacement didn't make it a year. No HG issues.
