Has this issue been resolved? I changed 3 injectors 1,5,7 and still have bad balance rates like before. Do the balance rates correlate with the cylinder number?

Ok sorry guys, just kinda frustrated here but oh well...

So 3 hours away from home last night I lost an injector. Started clacking/knocking/POURING white smoke. 25 miles after I filled up with fuel, go figure.

I had my truck towed to my buddys house in burlington cause he has a good sized garage. I didnt bring my tech 2 with me (stupid), so I used the DVT's in EFILive to try to diagnose the problem. I guessed it was an injector because the noise was an upper end "clack" and not a bottom end "knock", and I have no blowby or any other mechanical problems. Thick white/gray smoke is obviously fuel.

So I use the EFILive DVT's to shut off injectors. I get to #7 and the smoke goes away and the knocking immediately stops. YAY!! Found the problem. So then I call up Schulte (huge thanks, put it on my tab of things I owe you for bud :D ) and he meets me halfway between burlington VT and home in CT... so we each drive about 2 hours, him a little more. He brings me a set of good used injectors to get me home. I drive back up to burlington...theres no heat in the garage so at this point ive been working all day in ~38* replacing injectors. I swap my 40% tip over to a good used injector and put it in. Still knocks, no change. So I think ok maybe the tip is clogged, so I put in a good/used/stock injector. Still no change, smokes/knocks.

So I pull up efilive again, balance rates are all over the place. Use the DVT's and shut off injector #7. Smoke/knock stops. WTF!!!!! At this point its getting late and I just need to get back home because I have customers trucks in the shop tieing up the lift that I need to get done, business stuff, etc...

I call ScratchRob and he comes with the gooseneck and his LBZ to pick me up...I think he ended up driving 700 miles between getting his trailer, driving to VT, and driving back to my house. I owe you too, we agreed on a bazillion dollars compensation and a set of BT DieselWorks twins. :D Thank god I have such great friends...

So I go mess around with my truck this morning. This time I grab the Tech 2 and discover something interesting.

I fire it up, knocking, smoking etc. I go to the injector shut off/cylinder power balance thing in the Tech 2. I shut off injector #7, no change, still knocks. Shut off injector #3....KNOCK STOPS. Shut off injector #7 with EFILIve DVT's, and the knock stops.

Interesting.... I hope I didnt work all day in a 40* garage and make two of my friends drive hundreds of miles all because the DVT was telling the wrong injector to shut off...??? :(

Simon, you know much less about all this electronics/duramax shit in general than I do so buzz off.

when I get the engine back in my truck, I can put that known-bad injector back in each cylinder and then go through with the tech 2 and map it out.

You made this post and ranted on about it, You would think you would atleast attempt to help EFI in solving this "so called issue" so others could bennifit. You are the electronics wizzard and have a tech 2.......Do the test so we can put this thread to rest!

Sorry we received no feedback. Without evidence to back up the claims, we are in no position to make software changes based on hearsay.

I'm surprised that there still hasn't been any follow up on this but I'll be happy to do this test once I recieve my EFI V2.

Seems to me you don't really need a Tech 2 either, just shut off each injector and probe for firing.
Unless I'm missing something, that should map out cylinder numbers with those given under the DVT.

I have access to LB7, LLY, LBZ model years and have a Tech II with a Candi Module.

Please email me or PM me with the test procedure you need done and the data you need and I will get it done for you in the next week.

It seems like Tony was willing, is knowledgeable enough, and had access to the first 3 platforms, I wonder if EFI Live ever gave him the test procedure to try.

I have a TechII, access to almost every Snap On scanner, and my V2 all within hands reach basically. Does this test still need to be done? I can try it tonight?

Does anyone know if this problem has been corrected with the new V2 or not? If not can someone verify which cylinder is goes with which injector when shutting them down with the V2.

Help Please.

Maybe try unplugging each injector harness 1 at a time and see if the particular one does something funny on the balance rates pids.

You can certainly use a Mechanic's Stethoscope on the injector body to listen for the mechanical "click" when it fires.

You should also be able to see the injector fire using a clamp on DC ammeter (no current = injector off).

No one stepped up to do the testing, so we cannot confirm if the software is currently accurate or inaccurate.

At this point of time we are not actively seeking someone to do the testing, but if someone steps up we'll work with them.

I tried to do the test today both with a mechanic's stethoscope and with an electrical test pen (like the ones used for detecting voltage on wiring, likely only works on AC voltage though) and after shutting each one off successively I wasn't able to tell if the injector was on/off. Now I didn't have a helper so doing it by sound was hard to say the least. So I'm at a loss for how to verify beyond unplugging an injector (not sure if it is even safe to run like this) and then try shutting them off successively until I find one that doesn't change the idle at all. I could hear the idle change when I did it so I know it wasn't an error on my part (ie an injector definitely turned off). I also don't have a clamp on style ammeter or I would have tried that too.

Does Cindy or anyone else happen to have any other ideas for how to test them?

I'm happy to do this, but I'm stuck at this point. It would really be nice to get this mystery solved conclusively though.

What about a noid light kit(injector test lights) not sure they they would handle 48volts though if it's on your 05, maybe rent a set from Autozone or O'reily :D
