Bought my 2005 duramax a year and few months ago. Love it. Has had some minor problems due to PO dont take care of it. Now its gettin better everyday that I own it.
Feb 10th of 2013. On my way home from lowville, ny (tug hill). Snowmobiling trip. I looked in side mirrors, holy shat alot of black smoke. Checked my tunes I was in the right position, pulled off at next exit shut off the truck. Filled er up, went to restart no start 3 hours later new fuel filter, took air filter out, and ether( i know its bad had no choice) fired right up. Still smoked. Ahh screw it. Drove 160 miles more to home.
Got home played with it. Checked the harness, every possible thing from this forum too. Got called to work out of town. I say screw it sent it to a good shop, say 2 injectors needed replaced so I say go ahead. Started on its own but has a miss. So went ahead and changed the remaining 6, now she runs new and powerful.
Moral of the story don't trust PO's maintenance schedule with any trucks thats why I always thought it was running rough when I first got it. But asked everyone I know they say its a diesel, and sounds good. So I left it alone. Big mistake cause that was one expensive snowmobile trip.
Now I keep close eye on the truck! And love it more since its soo smooth now!
