I probably sound like a dumbass - but is there a way to do that remotely? Guessing I don't have some needed hardware/cables/etc. I've heard of techline but not familiar with that.

So EFI could talk to it enough to get the serial number. Roger that.

No you can’t do it remotely.

You would need either an MDI2 or another approved GM tool like a mongoose (~$600).

I’m not horribly familiar with HP on this platform simply because it’s never in the conversations of platforms to use. EFI nor SPA would not have an issue flashing the module.

You can send me the modules and I can reflash them with SPS.

If you plug in your HPT it shoudl tell you what the hardware is. It will however fail out if you try to 'read' it since the OS was changed to accommodate the dsp5. Thats how i seem to recall. And don't feel like a dumbass. We all started somewhere!

Ok was thinking it was something along those lines. Great service for the money and thank you! It very well may still come down to this.
I was suprisingly able to make contact with the original tuner who did the 5 position efi tunes, waiting to hear back, but he thinks he still has the stock tune from my truck. Didn't think this avenue would pan out, but it might. So that may end up being the easiest way to return to get on with this. Thanks!

It gave me some OS numbers when I tried to read the tune, but no serial or anything further. I got a matching OS base file and built my tune from that, but HPT won't flash it to the truck no matter what I do. As usual, HPT was no help.

I have tuned probably 50 cars, trucks, airplanes etc. over the years and somehow have never had to deal with this type of fiasco. Most of my projects use standalone ecus or at least had access to the ECU tunes or the stock tune from said vehicle to start with. I have definitely been lucky that way. This truck is literally built from probably 3-4 different trucks and is no surprise it's throwing some curve balls. I usually am smart enough to stay far away from things that other people have worked on and modified very much...... usually ?‍♂️?

Really do appreciate the help from all you guys on this forum. HPT forum deleted my post, and wasn't helpful through the support system. But here people have taken the time to offer ideas, and solutions, base files etc. Awesome!

Will report back if I am able to obtain the stock tune and get it flashed back on the truck. Fingers crossed.

I heard back from the original guy that put the tune on the truck. He doesn't have the original stock tune.... I asked him if he could slap a single tune on it and he said he would load up a single tune through EFI on the truck. I feel like I have a better chance of reading the ECU with HPT with a single tune back on the truck. Am I wrong in my thinking? He didn't seem to care if I get his tune, which is nice... ( I don't care about it anyway). So this seems like it's worth trying before ripping the ECU out....

Please just ask him to put a stock file in the truck, both ecm and tcm.

I get you don’t want to rip the modules out but you’re making this harder on yourself. If he doesn’t have the equipment to put a stock file on it I would look elsewhere because it seems like you want to tune it yourself.

Was a bit of a hassle but we found a stock tune that matched my OS and flashed the truck with his efi live. I was then able to read the tune with HP and go to work on it.

Still dialing in shift points and vane position on a high rev tune but it’s coming together. Squeezed a couple more mpg (according to the dash) out of it and really enjoying diving back into the dmax tuning journey again!!

Thank you all for the help!! It led me down the path of getting control of the tune!

***Quick question (maybe)…. Do you guys think it’s worth doing the XDP crank pin mod to make sure the balancer doesn’t sheer the pin and potentially contribute to a broken crank..??

Yes

But a key is better if you can do that

If you're going to do this I recommend replacing your balancer with either a new OEM unit or an aftermarket unit. I say this because once you do it, the balancer and crank can no longer be separated, meaning that if one fails they both are junk. The chances of you ever being able to redrill a replacement damper in the exact same spot is slim and honestly not worth the risk.

With the age of these trucks it's not uncommon to see the rubber starting to deteriorate and pull away.

^good advice on renewing the balancer if it’s old, but it’s not that hard to drill a new one to match. I’ve done it. Buddy went from OEM to FLUIDAMPR and I drilled the FLUIDAMPR to match the hole from when I pinned his OEM.

Would there be a better balancer vs. stock to upgrade to while doing this mod? I’ve run fluidamprs on other engines and they seemed good. Thought I saw it said this pin kit wasn’t compatible with certain aftermarket dampeners…

Fluidampr gets my vote.

The CR2 pin kit is. I rent mine out for the cost of a deposit, shipping, and a pin.

you are awesome.... thank you

this truck could use a new radiator.... it's not leaking yet, but It has some damage on an end tank and I'd like to replace it before it starts...
will probably get a radiator, larger trans cooler (or do the flip mod at least). do a water pump, hoses, etc. while in there doing the dampener and pin....just get it all while I have it tore down.

Let me know, I can get you squared away with all of it and my CR2 pin kit just came back so it's available if needed.

Radiators: I use nothing but Northern Radiator or OEM GM here. Northern Radiator is the only radiator I've seen that is actually an improvement over GM. They run an every so slightly higher fin density AND they double band them for durability/longevity.

Trans Cooler: I run the Mishimoto coolers on everything, they (at this time) are the best performing cooler on the market that I've used hands down. I am working on my own cooler but it is not ready at this time and will initially be targeted at 01-05 guys first then 06-10.

Thank you!
Will be in touch. This truck was a joint venture with the girlfriend. She buys majority of the parts, I do the work is kind of how it's playing out. Talked her into getting rid of her POS 2021 5.7 eboost 1500 RAM, it struggled pulling our horses (crazy high oil temp) and had all sorts of issues. She bought it right before I came into the picture. I want to see this thing be successful!

So when she is ready to buy more parts for it, I'll get on this next round of mods and upgrades and improvements!

Done a fair bit of work to it already. Tonight I may throw it on the lift if I have time and do the tie rod sleeves and trans go jr.
Thanks!

*Pic added. Not my choice in wheels or the lift keys on the torsion bars. So still some things to change eventually. But a fairly clean truck, and I am a sucker for white.

Shoot man I could be wrong on this, I always thought it did help on the 6 speeds. Seems in google searches that is the consensus but I've been out of the loop for a while on these trucks. And we all know how "info" on the interwebs can be.

My last LBZ I did a DPC single disc converter, and a trans go jr and beat the absolute crap out of that truck with hundreds of 4x4 launches and pulls. I built a high rev tune for it with the S366 and didn't let it shift to 5th WOT. Hurt in the 1/4 but still went mid 12's revving 4th way high. Now I would imagine it was more the high rev, high hp / not high torque tune that kept it from limping or having issues but figured the trans go jr might have helped...? Wouldn't hurt my feelings not to have to install it though if it doesn't do anything :ROFLMAO:

Transgo Jr is really the only good option for trim valves. I'd run the Ratiotek white shift springs too
oh just read up on these after seeing your post!
bummer I didn't know about these a head of time... put in the t go jr tonight and would have loved to do that tonight. dang!
