7.8 duramax problems

hello, does anyone here have any experience with the 7.8 duramax? It's a 03 c6500 roll back. The guy I'm helping said they fired it up ran down the road and it just died and wouldn't restart, I stopped today to take a look at it and it turns over but will not fire there is fuel up to the injector lines and while cranking there is smoke from the exhaust. Unfortunately I don't have a medium duty scanner to check codes. Anyone have any ideas?

Sounds like an injection issue. Not too familiar with 7.8. Do they have cp3's?

No. Its a Denso fuel system.

Not too familiar with them. But I would probably be looking for something electronic. Scanning for codes may help. Any local truck shop you can borrow from? Truck scanners are not cheap. What kind of smoke?

No. Its a Denso fuel system.

Very close to the 8.1l common rail John Deere...

Check the connector at the fuel rail pressure sensor. Seen lots of issues with those on the Deeres. If Matt says there similar I would start there.

Old thread sorry for the delay but I hate when these are left dead.......it was air in the fuel system along with a nasty fuel filter
