Well this project, like most, has stalled.

I was working on getting the truck running after towing it to a friend's place to get it out of my way. After pulling the #1 glow plug (stem broke while removing the harness) we found it was bent. Pulled the brand new injector and found it covered in oil.

5min later with an inspection camera we found the below condition.
Yellow is connecting rod
Green is wrist pin
Red is piston wrist pin boss

So now this truck ALSO is getting a built motor..........
1) Boostline rods
2) Mahle OEM replacement LB7 pistons (delipped, +0.020")
3) Mahle H series main/rod bearings
4) ARP main/head studs with OEM main caps
5) Small stage 1 cam, likely Comp or Callies
6) Manton/XDP conical springs and 7/16 pushrods
7) Fluidampr
8) Goerend/DHD/BD style aftermarket flexplate
9) DHD pinned/shimmed oil pump

Condolences and congrats, Brad.
Some days I hate being a gearhead......................

I'd love to throw a stock motor back in this thing but we all know how trustworthy 06+ pistons are...........

Then my brain says "well just put a budget rod in it, you know you'll end up putting compounds on it some day"................... That's where things spiral haha

Hell, make Issac's day and buy his rods. Add a set of LB7 pistons and away you go.....

You also could probably scrounge your shop and find enough spare parts to build a competitive engine, too.

I have the LB7 pistons, rod/main bearings, damper, damper bolt, and flexplate already. The Boostline rods will be here Wednesday. I will be sending my pistons out to Dan's to be delipped tho. They're genuine Mahle OEM replacement LB7 pistons.

While I like Isaac and believe he's selling a great connecting rod, my cost on the Boostline rod is considerably less than his asking price. Out of respect for Isaac I felt it appropriate to not even make that lowball offer.

This engine will be roughly "on par" with the engine in my LB7 honestly, with the main difference being Mahle Motorsport pistons on my LB7 vs the delipped OEM replacements in my LBZ.

It's definitely odd. Usually when they're like this I don't see the wrist pin area of the piston surviving. This appears to have popped the top of the piston clean off.
Brad, Let me know if you need some stock replacement Piston and rods. I saved the one's from my motor.

Also that is a familiar site... my buddies 8.1L just grenade the Number 5 piston. I tried to talking him into LBZ swapping it... lol

I have another Complete LBZ if you need to go that route. About 180K on it. I pulled the intake horn and it had far less build up than my 220k mile engine. So I do believe the miles.

I've got the new Mahle here already as I know neither block will clean up well enough without boring. I do appreciate the offer tho! The wheels are too far in motion to put a stock engine back in it hahaha

The boostline rods showed up yesterday (pics to come).

Interesting design, good bolts at least. Anyone pushed the limits on them? Comparable to the Callies?
After talking to DHD, these are superior to Callies. Evan at DHD told me they've made over 2k on these rods already and they've been perfect.

DHD is (or has) making the switch to them for all of their engine builds due to quality and they're even cheaper than Callies retail vs retail but even more so now as they're USA made where Callies are hit with a tariff due to overseas production.

Honestly I see no downside with these rods. The I beam design, in my opinion, is superior over an H beam for big power handling from a geometry standpoint and they're a relatively light rod (1176g).

Howards are 1097g (X beam)
Carrillo STD are 1098g/1108g depending on fastener (H beam)
Callies are 1182g (H beam)
Brian Crower are 1110g (I beam)
Carrillo HD are 1200g (H beam)

Give 'em hell, Brad! This build is starting to sound very fun.
Thanks! It should be pretty straightforward. Engine/trans are already out so I'll be starting teardown soon and will post some carnage pics.

Realistically I would call this the "average build" meaning I think it's pretty close to what the "average" consumer does. Meaning they run a 60-100% injector, some form of drop-in turbo, stroker single/dual pumps, built trans. The engine build itself is aimed at being budget friendly and thoughtful while still being able to handle 800-1000whp.

It may end up with a 80mm-ish turbo over the 63.5/66 VGT drop-in at some point but that's a ways down the road.

Do you have a good block or rebuilding that one?

Is that the current retail price or is that a sale price from boost line?

Plan is to rebuild this one. If the block is hurt I have an LB7 block here I'll likely use, time will tell. My LB7 has an LBZ block in it haha.

As far as I can tell this is retail price, I have not seen any indication that they are on a sale.
