GT4508r or GT4708r? Low pressure charger

So with winter coming up, gonna go with a new set up on the truck while it's parked and I am thinking about ditching the cheetah for a set of twins. I'm wanting to run ball bearing Garrett turbos for high pressure and low pressure. I'm pretty dead set on a gt4088r gated to either a gt4508r or gt4708r which would be a better turbo and why? Any input would be great. I'm not to knowledgable with turbos.

4708r. The difference is the turbine, and in a big primary application you'll appreciate the added efficiency from the 47 turbine, especially since the exhaust gas has already been decelerated and cooled going through the secondary.

Or actually I'll wait til you post your answer to what you want to do with it, but the match for a 4088 is a 4708. Depending on your goals you maybe need a whole different set.

Debatable for sure... What setup did you try? Generally the borgs actually have bigger turbines relative to the compressors, but a tight housing and gate can do wonders and the housing options are almost endless.

Extremely fun street truck, might tow a enclosed car trailer couple times a summer. I want something that will spool fast, and be efficient. I've ridden in a truck with a 4094r and it didn't light as fast as I would like, and I've been in a truck with a s364/s480 and it ran how I wanted, but I am a not a fan of bushing/journal bearing turbos.

Just have seen them fail frequently. Also seems like they increase oil temps more than a water and oil cooled ball bearing unit. I had a friend go through 3-s366 in 2 months. I also was in a truck with the same mods twin over stock set up but one used a gt4202 and one used a s475 and the 4202 had more top end.

I like the precision turbos, lots of turbine wheel options and even more housing options. I use the same principle, small housing and a gate.

I like the topic. Just had some questions.
Did your friend have billet wheels in all his S366 turbos?
What failed?
Did the S475 compound have a billet wheel?
If not, that is where I believe the BW turbos can excel over the Garrets. Keep in mind you can go to the Garret GTX models with billet wheels and they even have race gtx4294r turbos clipped to 65mm.

I was thinking of trying the GTX3582R as a high pressure turbo in a compund because I drive heavy freeway traffic and need a quick low end turbo but also need the big end too. So I wonder what could be stacked on top of that turbo?

Below are the 2 maps. gt4088r & gtx3582r They are similar but the 3582 makes more power. The turbine wheel is smaller but with a waste-gate that shouldn't be a problem.

You can see the 11 blade billet wheel makes the difference.


Also I know comp turbo makes quality inexpensive ball bearing turbos with billet wheels that say they are superior and have an array of compressor/turbine options, but the only problem I see is that they use an aluminum center section and I wonder if that is an issue?

The s366 were cast and the shaft kept breaking, the s475 was billet, only diff in trucks was one was 5 speed Allison and one was 6 speed, 6 speed had s475

IIRC mika ran a 4088/4708 tight a/r and gated on both..
i know of a dodge guy running a GT3788R/GT5533R out in the rockies.. towed 12k nicely until above 8,000'

I really enjoyed the gt55 with my gt35 but I Do agree it is not what I would choose for your goals. I am currently running the gt35 with a gt4718 with the 1.39 housing. I love it, this is a great street setup for me. I also ran an wh1c (stock) over a gt42 and liked it. Favorite street set so far is the gt35 with the gt47. Just for reference I have an A/W intercooler between stages on all of the setups I have run.

The gt35 is a great street turbo. like a stocker I get boost when i give it throttle regardless of rpm, very easy to drive and never bother looking at egt gauge unless i am really on it.

I would guess if you could try them back to back you would prefer the 35 over the 37 for your goals. But would you like it enough to justify the expense and effort of selling you current turbo and buying a 35? Your call obviously, I probably would but I waste a lot of money on this stupid truck because of my curiosity.

I no problems with spooling with what I have. In a compound setup with the 366 it's not pushed as hard as it is as a single.

My setup is pretty similar to what you're asking. GT4094 gated and GTX4508, spools fast and tows great. I wouldn't be afraid going bigger with how fast it spools and the way it tows.

Plans have changed, I got a good deal on a gt4202r and have a 63.5 billet cheetah.. Question is will it be okay to run the truck with the tunes it has now? It's tuned for the cheetah, not twins. Will I hurt the motor if I run it twinned for a while on the cheetah tunes?
