So I am currently running 3rd gear for pulling but seem to be a little lower on boost then when I ran 4th gear. I know most 2.6 guys are running 4th gear and a few Dodge guys running 5th.

I know 4th is 1:1 but would 4th put more load on the motor giving me more boost or shouldn't it matter between 3rdGreen and 4th?

IT will load harder in 4th causing more boost especially with 373s. 3rd and 73s will be kinda free reving the engine mid track with almost no load.

mines a zf6 I pulled in 4 lo fourth. which is 1.30:1,
and it was free revy and I actually quit spinning til the end of the track.
I did fifth in 4 lo last time which is 1:1 and It had way more load and pulled a lot harder all the way down the track.

Why haven't you regeared yet? 4:10 or 4:56 third gear starts shift to fourth lock the converter and really load the motor. I know you drag race too. Maybe it's time to invest in I other set of axles to swap in when racing. Much easier to swap the front pumpkin and entire rearend and have the gearing that you need instead of making everything a compromise.

I'd say the compromise is a lot easier than swapping everything everytime you switch sports, just saying.

I didn't mean to say it was easy. I guess it all comes down to how serious you want to compete in each discipline. You can't be the best in both with the same truck without a lot of hard work.

I think we have all faced these choices with our trucks. I know I have. To really set it up to pull means it won't tow or daily drive. Mine is my only truck so I chose to compromise so I can still drive it. It also means that I don't get first at the pulls.

Do you have a converter unlock? Don't see why you can't hang fourth and then unlock the converter at the end.

I couldn't agree more with you! Compromise sucks, but it is a crappy fact of life. If only we were all filthy stinking rich.

Well I learned real quick tonight I need 4th gear. I started in 3rd, had 35psi then shifted into 4thit and went to 55psi and snuffed at the end. Next weekend I am going to try and start and 4th and hold it.

Sorry I wont go lower on my gears as I am just trying to maximize my current setup but yes you do have to compromise.

Oh the good ol 3rd or 4th.... my bros twinned lmm with 315s ran good a couple times in 4th and other times fell under then switched to 410s but i dont think is enough to make it work every time .. i ran 3900-4000 rpm last hook with 305s so i dropped to 285s and might try 4th:confused:

I'm running 35's and re-geared to 4.11's I don't feel like that was a compromise at all, the truck feels stronger all the way around, pulls harder off the line, spools and pulls faster when passing, and egt's are lower while towing. That being said, I have never sled pulled, so I don't know how taller gears would affect the rig in that arena, but I can't imagine it being a detriment....if anything I feel like and think staying with the stock 3.73's is the compromise if you are running a 35" tall tire

using boost to reference load on the motor in this fashion is horrible reference. just because its only getting to 35 psi doesn't mean theres no load, as well as you hitting 55psi in 4th, air is just building up cause theres no were for it to go(low rpm). boost is just a measure of restriction. unless you have 1300hp, that's a pretty steep gear. imo, I would regear to 4.88 and run direct unless its sandy soil, then that a whole another story. ultimately its what you want, and your pocket book can do. the best way it was explained to me, and at the time didn't make much sense, but in order to go faster, you need to go slower
