Got my built motor running but runs like a complete bag of smashed a$$holes. When I set the timing the balancer was at tdc but I think I was 360 out.Oil smells like burnt fuel/just plain bad.Pulled it down and redoing the timing and need some help.Im overthinking everything and confused the shit outa my self. How do I know where tdc compression/fire is?I used the Mcrat thread but I f ed something.Need some guidance guys and doing it as we speak. Thanks in advance:confused:

My advice is to step back, take a break and come back to it tomorrow if you can. You need to relax so you can think.

Reread Mcrats Thread or if you like I can send you pics from the GM Manual.

Put a push rod down it and your intake will be come up when the Pistons going down and closed when it's coming up. When it's closed and it's coming up that's the compression stroke. If the cams not installed there is no set strokes, it gets set by the cam. Line those marks up and then adjust the valves after you stick the pushrods in to find compression stroke. You messed up the valve timing that's what it is

I know!I'm not going to rush but still need to know.If #1 is at tdc how do I don't know which stroke or does it matter as long its at tdc? Must have been a Monday when I did that.

If the cam is installed (obviously it is), then you need to find tdcc (compression). Are you using the correct #1? Merchant Auto has write up on setting lash also.

Roll the engine until the #1 exhaust rocker closes and the intake rocker starts to open. This is valve overlap. Turn engine 360° further and that's tdc compression.

The fastest method is to set both rockers on #1tdcc, and half the other valves (can't be 100% on which ones), roll engine 360° to get tdc overlap on #1, then set the remainder of the valves.

The "fool proof" method is to just roll the engine over and watch when one rocker is mostly open, and set the opposite rocker.

Clear as mud? :D

If you keep rolling it over after setting it on the wrong stroke you will find that there is huge valve lash, like crazy big

Look on the socal diesel website there method is fool proof. Just set one valve at a time won't matter if it a alt. fire cam or std. If done this way, good luck

If it's alt order cam you can still use the cheat sheets.... Just compare the fire order example stock they made the cheat sheet from 1,2,3,4 fire order but your cam is 4,2,1,3... You can still use that same sheet. But you'll need to modify it. mark out the 1 and put 4 to adjust , mark out 3 and put 1 to adjust mark out the 4 and put 3 and so on
