Don't know about this ^. They may be hiring in areas other than engineering, but I can't speak to that aspect.
I graduated in 2011 with a BSME and EIT certificate in hand. Spent 16 months trying to find a job and kept losing out to engineers with 9+ years experience taking entry level jobs. I applied to several nuke plants, coal plants, and even natural gas plants as well as numerous private companies. I finally got on with the Navy designing weapons.
I have a good acquaintance that is a journeyman electrician. He's had to take a second job since he can't find work as an electrician and his wife got laid off and had to start her own business just to keep afloat.
My advice is stay with the job you've got for now until something changes with the economy (November will tell us if it will get better or worse). I do recommend trying to start a business on the side, especially in something you enjoy doing. Of course, it doesn't hurt to apply for jobs while you are working. Worst case you will end up getting hired somewhere else.
Well, that's my $.02 worth. Good luck with your decision(s) - It's tough to be stuck in a job went to crap.
So did I. I started in June of 2001 before the downfall of the airline industry. I got into the elevator industry, they like aircraft mechanics, and it pays better than the big airlines. Harder work though depending on what you do.
I'm a sales manager at a MC Dealer. I'm thinking about a career change as well. I feel like I'm maxed out here. My pop's is a welder, and I've always thought about getting into it. He makes some serious coin when he wants to.
Does anyone have any connections to a lineman job here in the Phoenix area? It is something that I have been interested in for awhile, and I would like to start moving in that direction. If any of you current lineman have a connection to call here in AZ I would greatly appreciate it!:thumb:
Thinking about srp or aps? Ive been trying for awhile too. I think theres a guy on df thats a lineman for srp, but he also said its tough to get into but its best to go to the hall and put your name on the books.
Go to a climbing school .. It def looks good on an application.. Got me where I am today!

I went to southeast lineman training center in ga.. There's a northwest training center somewhere out there.. It's all on the Internet I believe
Tech schools have them I know there are ones in AZ I don't know what there called though or if there private or through the public school system definitely good to have for utilities though. There is a union lineman apprenticeship to u interview and get put on a list that route sucks but its a foot in, utilities generally don't look at guys with no experience but once you get a foot in they pursue you to the point you have to screw up to not get in.
We have two family friends pretty high up in APS that run the lineman crews there, problem is they are not hiring till this spring and if you have no schooling behind you for it nor any experience, you wont get in plain and simple. they are picky on what comes through and even our friends only ahve so much pull on a decision. Your better off lookin at a contract company like klondike and starting there, your jsut gunna start as a grunt and probably with bad pay.
Go to CGCC out there on your side of town. you can get an associates for lineman work and they are a school APS/SRP actually feel teaches you correctly.

Journeyman lineman here business is booming and things are looking good for some time to come I have to travel alot but it's a choice first couple of years as an apprentice can be rough but the pay is good the company I work for currently has a job in Phoenix we are union so I suggest going to the local hall and applying for an apprenticeship or taking a groundsman job until one opens up.
Northeast lineman college if anything like southeast has a class to get your cdls too... It's only a 3 month school.. They help u get a job the whole time too
