Anybody having trouble with a crap power steering system? I don't know why but I seem to burn up pumps.........Tires aren't that big either (295/75 R16)....Is there a good aftermarket pump? Is the problem with the gear?....Any suggestions on how to eliminate this problem? 2005 2500HD

Does it make a noise? I think mine might be making a noise you can feel in the steering wheel when you are not moving and turning, but I think it is something not greased in the front end becuase it happend after I greased the fittings to much and broke them.

sometimes when I want to back into a spot, i put the truck in Reverse and turn the wheel all the way to one side or the other. when i do that, it doesn't want to turn easily at first, then after about 2 seconds, it turns fine.

also, when pulling out of a parking lot and truning the wheel, there's some sort of vibration feel and noise that seems to be coming from the column... don't know what that is either

The noise from the column is the two piece steering shaft clunking around. You can live with it, or you can take it apart and grease it. It will eventually start clunking again though. If you search "intermediate steering shaft", I'm sure you'll find all the info you need.

Power steering pump whine is common, not really a bad thing either. In stock form, the pumps are setup to operate as best as possible. They pulley speed is set so that at idle or slightly above idle is where you'll get the most steering power.

You can modify the pumps fairly easy, but it doesn't make it much better, just better at different RPMs.

Yeah I cant figure out if its in the steering, power steering, or front end?

Sometimes when the truck is completely stopped and once you get to a certain spot turning it sounds like rubber or plastic is rubbing against rubber or plastic and you can feel it in the steering wheel and its pretty loud too.

I wouldn't expect the power steering to turn the tires when they aren't rolling. If it does it, thats great, but a certain way to smoke a pump by putting that much pressure back on it. If you do that on a regular basis its probably part of your problem.

I don't even try that with 35X12.5 tires.

The intermediate steering shaft could possibly be mistaken for a loose front end. usually happens when your turning at low speed and hitting bumps, big or small. Like entering and exiting driveways seems to do it the worst on mine.
