LBZ: No crank, everything dies

I have an '07 LBZ dually. Issue is that it will only start with a jumper pack. I replaced one battery 6 mos ago and replaced the other today. The battery (or possibly batteries) would not hold a charge - I would need to jump them if the track sat for 20mins or more, even after a 1 hour drive. Voltage gauge is reading 14.4 or so with the engine rulling, so it seems like the alternator is fine.
When I turn the key to the "start" position, there is a click (or sometimes no click) and everything dies - the dash, all lights etc AND the power windows will not work. These are aftermarket and directly powered from the red junction box.
If I take the key out and put it in --- still nothing - all dead.
If I hook up the jumper pack, everything is back to normal and I can start it.
It is almost like some huge relay or switch is getting stuck and the jumper pack fixes everything, which I know is not the case from looking at the schematics

I realize the standard procedure is replace both batteries at once before doing anything else - but I'm stumped as it seems like something else (other than plain low cranking amps) might be causing an issue.

You need a pair of new or known good batteries to start with, whether you go buy them or borrow them... Get it running and check to see if it's charging with a battery/alternator tester, don't just rely on the gauge. If it's charging then try it out. If it still goes dead something must be up. Check ALL cables and connections.

Tighten down the battery terminals. That sounds like classic loose battery side posts. If you can grab your terminals and move them they're too loose.

Swapping the other battery worked, no surprise to me or anyone else I'm sure.

One indicator (for the future) that the other battery was not up to par was that the volts gauge stayed pegged at ~14.4 immediately after start-up. Remembering back, with good batteries, the gauge moves around from ~13.4-14 for the first few minutes (part of the power management system, per the service manual).
