Hi All,

I was a diesel mechanic for about 10 years out of vocational school, 35 years ago, until about 95' when the electronic control stuff was introduced. I worked mostly on commercial marine, fishing trawlers and small cruise ships, etc. which were exempt from any electronic or emissions stuff, so I never saw any of it. I rebuilt many 16V92s and installed many MANN engines in new ships but was out of the business before those started to need tear downs. Anyway, I just purchased a 26 GMC Elevation with the Duramax 3.0 / max tow package. I did a lot of research before selecting this truck and have read some horror stories about the DEF and DPF systems. The truck will eventually be transitioned to my daughter who will be hauling horses with it, so I purchased the extra warranty that covers all power train and fuel system components to 100K miles.

Most of the issues seemed to be related to poor service or bad fuel, etc. I'm looking for feedback from anyone who as added additional or high performance filtering or recommended fuel treatments, etc. to reduce the chances of potential issues. Thanks in advance!

TX of course
I mean all you can do is maintenance and paint attention to your vehicle. Fuel filters and air filters that are not serviced at the proper intervals lead to a lot more emissions issues. Fuel additives don't hurt. They have def additives now if it isn't a vehicle that gets driven very much. Don't ignore check engine lights or things that don't seem normal. Especially since you paid for the extended warranty. Any little issue you have needs to bring the vehicle in for repairs that way it's Documented. That will help in identify points of failure and getting components replaced before the warranty runs out.

The best thing I have found for modern diesels is : Keep it under factory warranty. Use good fuel and good DEF. Keep a AAA card handy.

Have a back up truck if you make a living with it.
