As the title says I am a new duramax owner and a new diesel owner for that matter. I just bought an 06 lbz and straight love this truck already!!! It's got 160k on it, super clean truck all stock except for a banks intake and a magnaflow muffler. Egr hasn't been deleted. I will use the truck as a weekend camper tow rig in the summer and drive it on the weekends mainly. Any recommendations for the first performance mods?? Thanks for any input!!!!!
Well, you've come to the right place for performance mods, but you might want to hide your wallet, because none of us seem to know when to stop
If you search around, there are tons of threads covering good initial mods. Everyone has their own slightly preferred combo/order, but this is what I would do if I was starting over in your place:
"Trans safe" EFI Live tune. It won't be trans safe. You will blow your transmission up sooner or later.
Start saving for when you blow up your transmission.
Built transmission.
Lift pump and a good tow tune, maybe a DSP2 with a hot tune for the weekends you aren't towing.
EGR blocker plate, only really necessary with bigger tunes, IMO. No reason to delete it, just block it.
Stop while you are ahead. Get a nice sports car or motorcycle to scratch the fast itch.
Upgrade your turbo, something like the 68mm Stg2R VGT.
Stop while you aren't that far down the rabbit hole, and still know what money feels like.
A 4" (or 5" if you like it louder) exhaust actually starts to become worthwhile at this point.
Injectors.
Too late, you are one of us now. Kiss your wallet goodbye.
Built motor.
Crap, I've done it again. What even is money?
"Twin" turbos (really compound turbos).
That's a nice looking truck, and you're going to love the LBZ! Welcome!
Thanks for the insight!! I'll gladly throw my pennies into this truck lol I do want to keep it mild for right now but eventually It will become a monster!!!!! A money eating monster I'm sure but it'll be worth it, no doubt
I'd do efi live egr blocker plate pcv reroute and a lift pump.
It will be a completely different truck. Go with a good tuner like Danville or Idaho rob.
Thanks guys!!! This is my first diesel truck but I'm not totally new to diesels, my older brother had an 02 Cummins back when you where bad if you had a drag comp and a dual disc. I think I might have got lucky on my truck checking the carfax before I bought it I found that it had the turbo replaced at a dealership at 113k so hopefully that won't be an issue.
