So I'm new with diesel and duramax for that matter, but I am towing a bunch of stuff from NY to NC before deployment. I've done the reverse already but knew even less then and didn't have this forum. As someone who hasn't done much aftermarket to their truck yet, any advice on upgrades before or maintenenace?

Good fuel filter, air filter, oil change, check all fluid levels, and check the tires of course.

I always keep a spare Fuel filter behind the seat or in the toolbox. You never know when you might get some nasty fuel.
