Looking to change a failing stock charger, really like the idea of doing away with the VGT. I’m not looking for stupid power just a fun truck to drive on the weekend. I’m looking at the s364.5/s363, do these perform well in a near stock application? And what is required to change over to a fixed geometry turbo?

Welcome to the forum!

To install an S300 style turbo you really have 2 main paths:
1) Bolt in turbo style produced by Smeding Diesel
2) S300 swap kit

The Smeding route is cheaper/faster and honestly their turbos have been relatively decent. They won't win any performance awards but they seem to NOT have gobs of failures in my experience.

If you're staying stock fuel a 363/68/0.91 or 364.5/68/0.91 would both be great and spool pretty quick. They won't be VGT quick but they aren't lazy either.

Do you tow with the truck much? Honestly, I do get the draw of a non-VGT but I will say a quality aftermarket unit isn't failure prone. Look how long these OEM turbos last.

Don’t tow much, a 16ft boat regularly and a tractor once in a blue moon. I don’t plan on doing any crazy numbers and I like the idea of less moving parts

Just curious, would the smaller s400 frame chargers be way too much? Something like a S463

It keeps coming back to “what you want to do”.

A Garrett style turbo will be more responsive than any Borg, it’s just nature of the beast.

I’ve used a few 6275G units from Pulsar on trucks like yours and been happy. They again aren’t as responsive as a VGT but aren’t as lazy as say a smaller 83 turbine S400.
