Did they mention if they had to replace any guides or valves?
He said they replaced (4) guides. Took .005" to clean them up.

Motor only has 105,000miles on it, so I didn't expect it to need a lot of new hardware.

Fricking 105,000 miles, CP4 left the chat very early on, now this. Kinda makes you think.

But with studs and the better (hopefully) gaskets, maybe it will last.

Said he does at least (3) set of Duramax heads a week.

4 guides is not bad at all. The doner truck i bought had 227k on it and 1/2 the guides had to be replaced. Mostly exhaust. Then 5 intake valves and a few exhaust valves had to be replaced. .005 on the Deck is standard to clean them up

Well, you pretty much fixed all its issues at this point, assuming its t&d too. Going to be back to ripping in no time!

Like pure said, the gasket is always the failure. Stock headbolts and mahle gaskets will hold juuuuust fine

Well, the heads are in and torqued.

Valve lash set.

I did buy a 64mm wheel and cover from Dan’s Diesel.

Installation of the wheel went fine, but putting the cover on locks the wheel up.

Looks like the cover didn’t get fully machined. The transition radius has a definite hard ridge, not a smooth transition. The picture shows the “nick” in the cover from the wheel.

Double checked everything, no joy.

So my “spurge” on a turbo upgrade has cost me getting it back together this weekend.

I’m glad you’re getting it back together!!

Unfortunately this is reason number 1000 why wheel and cover kits aren’t recommended shops. I’ve had multiple customers with the same issue from Dans and KBD.

Another downfall is the lack of balancing.

Component balancing isn’t the same as assembly balancing.

Exchanged some emails with the seller of the wheel and cover.

To their credit, they replied on a Saturday evening.

Let’s just say, I was left with a couple options.

1. Continue the back and forth with them.
2. Bail out and return it to stock.
3. Try to get it to work.

I chose option 3, time will tell if I choose wrong.

Didn’t have any layout blue at home, so I used magic markers to highlight the interference areas.

Then used an 1/8” carbide burr in a pencil grinder to break the sharp edges of the transition, as per witness marks in the marked-up area.

(6) grinds later and some hand polishing, I think I’m moving on.
