While driving my 2002 duramax it instantly started blowing white smoke from the exhaust, it sucked all the coolant in the engine and appears hydrolocked. the shop I took it to said they pulled the glow plugs and got the engine to turn over but recommended I replace the engine. Is this the case or could it just be a head gasket issue?

Possibly one or more injector cups. Unless you bent a rod, I would not consider replacing the engine. There is a chance that erosion around the cups could be bad enough to warrant replacing the heads. But I'd inspect that before condemning the whole engine
