Building a shop and need ideas. 40x60 metal not pole barn

Have a few pics ill load when i have time. Ill put the TT, truck, burb and a lift in it. Want a over hang where the door will be. 2 maybe 3 garage doors.

Just looking for idea to bounce off guys that had or would change what they have.

Air comp room built outside of shop so you don't have to listen to it. Floor drain, these are two things that make me love my shop..clean and no mind numbing compressor. You can also never have too many air hookups along your wall.

Make it bigger than you think you need the first time around.

Good electrical. More then enough 120v outlets and 240v outlets for welding machine. Run a halo of air around the roof of shop make every coupling section a "t" fitting. So you can add or subtract drops as needed. Lighting, lighting, lighting. Lots of lights its frustrating to have to use a flashlight (torch) indoors. Bathroom. Trust me on this its worth the money. Over head hoist on a track to lift and slide parts around from the bed to the bench.

1st build a good concrete slab since it don't matter how nice the shop is if it falls apart in time .

I have shitty cracking black dirt so:

1/2 rebar 12" centers double layered on the top 10" thick top slab

30" beams with 6 5/8 rebar and plenty of stirrups

5500 psi concrete NO ASH

2ft of dirt removed and filled with crushed limestone for base


Oh and chain hoist is a must

Doors/building oriented so you're driving into the side will provide better overhead room for lifts as compared to driving in the end unless we're talking single centered door. Looking at the two you posted, the red one gives more overhead room without having to be a skyscraper. Obviously, if you like the other one with that overhang, it'll just have to be a little taller side walls to have the overhead space.

All good ideas, 10 or 12' overhangs all the way around could allow actual shop to be smaller. Not sure of your location, or temps. Smaller shop= better climate, clutter and tool control. Also, along with drain, inner wall liner panels, could create a designated wash bay with roll ups opposite of each other for drive thru car wash action. Also inner linner sheets also make a clean look for hidden air lines and electrical. Bathroom with shower is a must.

Outside is better, but if you can't spare the space outside, or don't want to pay for an extra room; build an interior mezzanine or shelf for the compressor up high, it will get the noise up off the floor.

Plan for where you want the lift and reinforce the slab in the areas underneath the lift columns.

Mine has 14' eaves, which fit the 12' lift columns perfectly, so there was a lot of room up high. I would also add the high windows for natural light. With them up high, there is light with added security.

Oh, PAINT THE FLOOR AND WALLS with GLOSS paint before you move in. It is a MAJOR help with cleaning and light.

Sub'd, I'm building one this fall! Good info already. On the subject of height, what's the shortest you can go with a lift +pickup truck ? And be Ok? We're building a mother-in-law suite about the first door and rv parking in the next bay. Id like to fit a lift in the short side and save the rv open bay. Sorry for the derail :hug:

I like the 4' t8 LED tubes. We've put well over 2000 in the past few months with 0 complaints. You can get a 4' 2 bulb led ready fixture for $15 on the internet and bulbs are anywhere from $6-$9 a piece.
