Moates Roadrunner Boot Issues

I have a ECU with a 29F400BC flash memory that I just replaced with a Roadrunner bought directly from Moates. The ECU was working well before, and there was no issues with the soldering. Now it doesn't boot and there is nothing on the CANbus. I am using TunerPro RT to connunicate with the Roadrunner, and using the data trace function I don't see any boot attempts at all.

I have tried both writing the flash and waking the ECU both with emulation on and off,
Is there something obvious I might have missed? This is my first attempt on this type of ECU tuning.

Engine is a Isuzu V6 6DE1
ECU is a Denso 275800-0997

Any advice is appreciated!

Not many here are familiar with TunerPro or even TunerPro RT. As much as I don't want to direct you away from this forum, you might have better luck woth the TunerPro forum for issues woth their software

Are you using the EFI live roadrunner? I'm not aware of any others if there are any

I get what you mean, but i havn't found much on that forum either. The Roadrunner itself is the exact same hardware as the one used with EFI live, which is why I figured people here may have some clues. I believe my issues are hardware related, but I'm not sure

Ok. Give it a little time. Might take some of the OG's to reply for the roadrunner as it's getting pretty old now and not many use it now.

Have you tried the EFI live forum?

Yes that is no problem! I know it is a bit old but I thought it matched the needs of this project very well, I havn't found any alternatives for this type of memory unfortunately.

I searched through the EFI live forum, nothing there seemed relevant to this issue, at least not at this stage. It appears people just plug in the roadrunner and it works straight away.

Unfortunately Moates is no longer in business.

I am not familiar with the ECU application you mentioned.
I suspect the one you are using is like the one meant for the LS1 style PCM. Since you mentioned CAN I think this is the one they had trouble with.

They had 1 version for a 512KB Version PCM and one for a 1MB version. The 1 MB version had some issues with stability and they never could resolve it, so they discontinued it.

Reaching out to Moates might be your better option, as it seems like more of a hardware issue than a software issue...
Yes I have tried that but he has not responded yet. I was in contact with him a couple weeks ago, so I assume he is on vacation or something

Edit: he answered and is determined to help solve the issues. I will update this thread when we have the answers

I think he is back in business since a year or two back. I bought the roadrunner in June this year and talked to him a bit just before.

He said the 1MB version should work even for a 512KB firmware which is what I am using. But the stability issues are still there it seems

Interesting, I had no Idea they were back.

From what I was told, the 512KB version seem to work fine. From some I know that had the 1MB version, it worked at first but then the software would do weird things and the vehicle would not run right. He eventually removed it and went back to the Original PCM.

Hopefully they can help you trouble shoot your issue. I never had one and don't know much other then that.

At one time you could even Upgrade to a Bluetooth option for these but they had connectivity issues and discontinued it.

I was searching on the RR stuff the other day. Very little data left about it outside the forums. No CAN tells me boot sector is missing or not loading.

Wish I had more to offer, but unless I find a good setup to clone, it's another end of life project.

I do still use a Moates RoadRunner. I move the guts between 3 different ECUs:
  • LB7 ECU, 512k (15166852)
  • LS1B ECU, 512k (12202821)
  • LS1B ECU, 1M (don't have the number written down)
I only use it with EFILive, and it works pretty well, but some OSes don't like it. Never had a no-boot, but it doesn't accept writes to the virtual flash and it appears to return so quickly that the Duramax OSes throw a code for flash performance out of range, but I just turn that off.

You do have to hold down Ctrl+Shift or something when flashing with EFILive because it thinks you shouldn't write a 512k OS to a 1MB RoadRunner, but it works fine.

You mentioned toggling emulation on and off. Did you remove the flash chip entirely, or piggyback it? I only ever remove the flash chip, so turning emulation off causes the ECU to immediately go dead. Never tested piggybacking, so can't comment if that is supposed to work or not.
