So now that I'm getting used to my new normal, I decided I needed a new toy. If you've been on here long enough, you'll remember i had a 94 full size blazer with a manual transmission, and I really missed rowing through the gears. So I bought an 82 Chevy K10 with a 4 speed.

I just got it home and put in my shop today. It's rough and needs some work, but I'm happy with it.

TX of course
Thinking I'm going to keep it small block and go with a 383 and a tr4050 5 speed.

I had a 383 stroker in my 80' when I was 18. That poor truck didn't stand a chance. We put a lot of work into it, but I tore it up just as fast. My dad got fed up and hauled it to the scrapyard. It had bucket seats in a short bed from the factory we believe. Would have been a bad ass truck had we continued to work on it and not let me molest it. But in all honesty it would probably be a pile of rusty by now.

I just came in from the shop, put the front axle up on jackstands and took the front tires off so I can look at the brakes and figure out why they don't work. The driver front Caliper was froze so the PO zip tied it to the inner fender. This is as far as I got tonight.

Man as much as I hate to be on the LS bandwagon..

Just LS swap it with the Tr4050.

Put a cam in it and roll on. It’ll run so much better and be so much more drivable.

Don't encourage me as my buddy that helps me with fabrication is saying the same thing

I'm more a 454 BBC person.. more then 96-00 HR MK6 blocks L29/L21.. swap intake for a dual plane manifold, small cam, upgrade valve train and your ~425/550 HP/tq with an extremely flat curve that's extremely hard to match with a LS based engine
Also get the serpentine system as well.. though I've swap the crank pulley to a 7" March dual 6 rib

I do like the torque a BBC makes

Old school engines are cool. They can do things easier.

They will never drive like an LS. Even with an aftermarket fuel injection.

Parts are stupid easy to find. Stock truck parts will make plenty of power with just a cam and springs. There is all of the information in the world on swapping them too.

425-450hp out of either a LQ4/LQ9 or a L29/L21 isn't hard on either
35" 4.10 gears and .76 OD at ~70mph is ~2100rpm

One needed a bigger cam to get said power out of a 6.0 then a 7.4. the 6.0 will make the power but further up the RPM band then the 454.. which can cause drivability/cruise issues

Obviously a 454 isn't going to spin RPMs like a 6.0 does without buying heads for the BBC, OEM heads quickly run out of air about 5000rpm without substantial work.

Stroking one and not the other is apples/oranges

This is my 77 K20 468(mk4)/400/4.10/35" that's getting a 4L80 later this year. And possibly swapped the mk4 for a MK6 based 496bbc later this year.

But put a LS in it and you get into LS fest 🤷🏻‍♂️🤣

Decisions decisions. Yall are killing me. Here i was thinking I had my mind made up on what I wanted.

In other news, I think I found out why the brakes don't work

That definitely doesn't help the situation 😕

And you're welcome 😁😂

OH, BTW, there's 1-2 companies that make a 168T FW that will take the 12" ls7 diameter clutch vs the common 10.5/11" diameter clutch

Tinkered around in the shop for a few minutes tonight, long enough to identify the driver front brake Caliper leaks fluid out the side of the piston. So it looks like a run to the parts store is looming in my future to get Rotors, Calipers, pads, and wheel studs. Oh, and hub seals and grease.
