I'm going to post some pictures of the transmission clutches from my LLY. Originally built back in late 2010, had slotted frictions in the c3/ c4 packs, OG Alto carbonite in the c1 and Alto Reds in the c2. The c4 pack had an Alto powerpack with Reds and thin Kolenes to get clearance with the pre-lml apply piston and spring plate, c3 pack are just a high energy friction with OE steels and a .380" top plate. Modified converter valve, shimmed pressure spring, transgo full kit with modified c2 piston (as Mike would have said, THAT WAS A MISTAKE! LOL). Suncoast 1056 that I bought second hand from a guy on Diesel Place for $550. Essentially this was my version of a "budget build", and these parts are more or less outdated and not used anymore, drum mods were done before that being a "no-no" was common knowledge.

The rebuild consisted of a good c1/c2 core drum with an unmodified piston (It was tore down and new seals installed but that was it). I reused the Alto c1 carb pack, changed the c2 to the grey GPZ frictions, c3 and c4 to LML+ pistons with the tan Alto G3 / Kolene steels. Converter got changed to a Goerend DL, I was originally set on the R stall but Brad kinda steered me towards the DL. I've driven a couple trucks with the DK and I like it, the DL splits the difference from DK to R in terms of stall, then once moving will couple closer to the DK according to Goerends data.

Pan looked good, fluid nice and clean, not much on magnet. I hadn't changed fluid in probably 5 or 6 years haha

Alto Reds in the c4 looked great. Clearance had opened up to almost 090", never got hot even with the 067 kolenes they sold with these kits.

C3 pack definitely saw some heat, which is typical. Never limped though, which is why I shake my head every time someone thinks their transmission is healthy because it won't limp. Never know for sure until you open it up. Clearance was at 068" on teardown. I think I had it at about 062" originally but can't find my notes.

This is one reason why it's not recommended to mod the c2 piston, c2 pack comes on faster and causes a rough 3-4 shift. One thing that surprises me is that the TCM dealt with this pretty well, and would normally shift smooth once up to temp. Didn't even bother measuring the c2 pack clearance, sorry

P2 not twisted, not enough power apparently

Alto carb c1 FTW. Clearance was .088" on teardown, I reused this pack in the new drum.

Happy with the pump wear, 245k miles.

Goerend DL converter seems to drive very similar to the SC1056 down low, couple better under heavy throttle. I get some more data / stronger opinion once the transmission is done learning and I try some 4x4 launches. Might break out the dragy since all the tracks are closed... We shall see.

Everything looks pretty darn good considering what it's done and what mods were in it! I'm curious to hear if you like the DL as much as I do in that situation.

Carb C1 are by far the best I've ever used and wish they never went away.

Definitely plenty of 5-4-5 shifts on the highway passing people over the years. I'm also surprised that the c2 pack didn't delaminate with how black the plates are, I've seen the Reds do that

That seems to be the norm with Alto, not sure why. I guess they don't like making separate materials for all the packs and want to keep them the same?

How was the case with those thin kolenes in there?
There were some witness marks for sure, nothing deep enough / unusual for me to worry about. Definitely nowhere near what the thin Kolenes will do to a drum. I'll have to sift through and measure each one, but I think there were only two or three thin Kolene and the rest were 098

Thanks for this, Pure. Nobody ever shares/shared trans teardowns or examines what went on inside. Mike rarely did. This is very helpful for those of us who dont go into transmissions, for whatever reasons. Eric made it look easy back in 2009 when he built mine but it was voodoo to me. One thing I would've loved to do before I sold the truck would've been to tear the trans down and see what it all looked like inside, 16 years later.

You mean you never looked in my build thread?? Thought i posted all my clutches or hard parts i killed as i went

If not, i bet i got them on my phone.

Acts similar to the old pink precision. 2k would push through.
When I load the 2nd gear "track tune" I'll load it up in 4x4 and let it rip to see what it does. Big tune doesn't hit peak tq until 2600-2700 by Mark's dyno, I'd say for a pure drag truck you'd want something to flash higher than this DL. But I think it's going to be a good mix of both worlds, being that I might only go to the track once a year

Once is better than none. Looking forward to what you find out.
