I had 2 of those trucks with 8.1/Allison, an 01 and 04. Either of those trucks stock would've dusted my LBZ stock. Those trucks did awesome burnouts. I had the 04 tuned with stainless works long tube headers and full exhaust. Pulled an s185 around without much effort. I'd buy another if I could find an 06 reg cab with the 6 speed.

Well maybe the old BBC will prove me wrong. I'll be racing them next week for sure.

Could you feel a noticeable difference with the headers and tune? And which tune did you use?

The Headers and tune and woke the truck up quite a bit. It definietly made it alot more responsive and reved easier. The stainless headers on the 2004 were not cheap but I had originally planned on doing more to the truck when I bought them. Back then I had a tuned ECM from Westers garage out of Canada. There weren't nearly as many tuner options in 2004 for those trucks. My 2001 in the video above felt like it had more snort stock over the 2004. Odly enough the 2001 was rated at 340 HP and 455 TQ and the 2004 was 330 and 450 I think. They went to throttle by wire in 2003 so maybe thats where the differences come into play. If your 8.1 runs good I would think it would outrun a stock LBZ, but I never raced them. FYI, I bought both the 8.1's new and they both burnt a quart of oil every 3000-4000 miles. Keep us updated if you line them up, I'm very curious. The Alison behind the 8.1 shifts unbelievably well without all the diesel torque and defueling.

Thanks for the info. I was looking at some shorty headers for 700 cermic coated. Probably do that first since it needs different exhaust anyways.

Yeah I think they all burned oil. I've been told they didn't clearance the bore for each piston. Just did them all the same. So that's why most of them used oil.

Also I thought all the 8.1s were drive by wire. This 2000 is. The 03-04 was for the smaller ls motors.

I think the 1st year for the 8.1 was 2001 in the new at the time HD trucks. Maybe they were both drive by wire, but i know something changed in the 03 and up trucks. Maybe it was just different ecm's and thats why the factory power #'s changed also. Hard to believe when these things came out in 2001 they were actually a viable gas towing option especially being as they had the Alison. They were hard on fuel but do have some damn good low end torque for a gasser. The current gas 6.0 option isn't even comparable to an engine that has been discontinued since 2006. I know fuel consumption played a factor, but I think they quit offering these in an effort to sell more higher priced diesels.

Any idea what rear gear it has? I think you could get 4.10 or 3.73 with those vs only 3.73 in the Dmax. Both of mine were 3.73 and I never got better than 11 or so empty around town. In 2006 and maybe 2007 they could be had with the 6sp Ali just like the Dmax's. I've always wondered what mpg they were able to achieve.

Brother had an 01 with the Allison behind it. It would wax a stock lb7, no contest. I'd say running an lbz would close. His burnt oil too, but he always towed with it so we caulked it up to running it hard. Best we got on a hwy trip to PA was 13mpg, I believe it was a 3.73 rear.

This guy must have not liked his engine or cared lol. Found this today

I edited this because I guess I'm bias. When it comes to oil filters I'm factory or wix racing all the way. When I was younger we blew apart the inside of a stp filter on a motor. Never liked them since. Wix never blew apart.

Love the oak bed in the C10. You should try Lyptus and red Mahogany stain. It will look like mahogany when done.

If you leave the Lyptus natural without stain it is Salmon colored.

Either way that stuff is Hard as Steel but works like butter.

I had a 2001 8.1 ran good with tune, exhaust and filter popped on tube.
Mine burned oil also they replaced the intake seals and new updated bolts no more issues with oil.

Thanks jawless. May try that combo on another project. I've got 15 different stains on the shelf before I decided on this one.

666 Thanks. I did some googling after you said this. Apperantly it fixes most oil consumption. I guess the intake is shifting causing oil consumption. Especially if you redirect the pcv port. Some are welding a pipe to the port under the intake manifold.

Well I got some stuff sprayed last night. Came out decent. Flares and bumpers are going to get black spray. It's definitely not coming off now lol
