    I would be doing a compression test before going any further. You statement about using ether to start it throws a red flag to me that you have low compression on atleast 1 cylinder. Could be injector related but if it needs ether to start im going to say there is something more at play here...

    Sounds like my lb7 did after doing headgaskets and valve adjustment.... and 10k miles later it dropped a valve... dont want to scare you tho. So there is a possibility ots pilot ignition but that seems like its definately too loud for pilot. Someone else will chime in hopefully that knows more...

    Once warm things expand and can cause higher compression therfore a starting easier while warm... can also check to make sure the fuel system is staying primed... could be losing prime over time also. Starting with wd may get it running to get the fuel system reprimed... alot of variables here...
