01-10 steering box redhead ,PSC ,OEM

To be clear, it was Cardone 978418GB or some other? Cardone has different boxes that they list for 01-07 and 07-10. Want to make sure we are talking about the same.

01-10 steering box redhead ,PSC ,OEM

Brad, have you gotten a six bolt box from RA recently? My Amazon order this week yielded a 2007-2010 style four bolt box from Cardone/Modulus. According to Fisher, the S stands for suoerceded.

01-10 Steering - Saginaw gear experts - What are reasonable expectations?

As an update, I've ordered the Cardone 97-8418, new box. If it doesn't have slop in it, it'll go on the truck. If it lasts, great. If it doesn't last, I'll have my redhead to send to a rebuilder. I took a quick look at ebay. Low mileage hummer h2 boxes that still have the gm factory...

01-10 Steering - Saginaw gear experts - What are reasonable expectations?

James, thanks for riding along on my excessively long rant. I put a dial indicator on the bottom of the sector shaft. Under light hand pressure on the steering wheel (engine off) I see 0.012" lateral movement. Firm pressure gets 0.035". I'm sure with power steering that box sees substantial...

01-10 Steering - Saginaw gear experts - What are reasonable expectations?

James, Since you have experience with them, if I was to drop coin on a Minh rebuild, can I expect it to hold its precision as well or better than what a brand new OE box would do? I'm assuming he has the ability to replace internals that are worn (sector, worm, nut) rather than just try to...

01-10 Steering - Saginaw gear experts - What are reasonable expectations?

The 21 page thread reflected a few folks buying the cheaper, china 6 bolt boxes. Is $360 for the Cardone/Modulus a bad move? Are they junk? No core return. 10 year warranty if I buy from Summit by getting them to pricematch Amazon. $520 if I want a local vatozone lifetime warranty or $740...

01-10 Steering - Saginaw gear experts - What are reasonable expectations?

Thanks Chevy. I guess my hope was: 1) "John, you've over tightened your box. Loosen it up and the hydraulic side will return to happiness." 2) "John, you're on the right track. Tighten more." 3) "John, 2" of play is about right at the wheel. This is not a modern R&P car. Loosen the box...

01-10 Steering - Saginaw gear experts - What are reasonable expectations?

It has been a thought of mine to have it aligned and ask for more caster. Truck is at factory z-height. No cranking. Trailer is a fifth wheel and I use airbags to keep rear sag to about 1 inch, just enough to get overload engagement. I read the 21 page steering box thread and concluded the...

    LBZ Fan Clutch

FWIW, we towed last weekend. One of those days was fairly warm. I will say the temperature seemed really stable when towing, right at 191-193 on the digital gauge in traffic and rolling hills. Never enough to engage the fan clutch. It may be some time before we tow in significant terrain...

01-10 Steering - Saginaw gear experts - What are reasonable expectations?

The short: As long as I've had the truck (just over a year) I've been trying to improve the steering. It was one of the reasons my father got rid of the truck and opted for a new one. The lane wandering makes it more effort to drive than our two daily drivers (rack and pinion) which leads to...

    LBZ Fan Clutch

I borrowed a tool similar to that from the parts store, along with the required 48mm clutch wrench. I just stuck two short bolts into the pin holes and grabbed those with the hooks. I couldn't pull hard enough on my improvised pins to get anywhere, but I was able to brace it against the AC...

    LBZ Fan Clutch

My hands are still healing. FYI, if you order a brand new GM wagon wheel, the spokes are razor blades on all the edges. If I ever have it out again, I will go over it with sandpaper. I'll also slot the lower two mounting holes. I might even consider loctite to hold the bolts in place...

    LBZ Fan Clutch

Thank you for your take on the shroud flaps. Keeping the flaps folded back during install was a challenge, but logic said that would be the more functional arrangement. My radiator is clean, externally at least. I would have a hard time cutting fins out of a shroud that I just paid money for...

    LBZ Fan Clutch

Well, I just finished installing a new rear fan shroud and a 2886 clutch. I can see why the shrouds get discarded. Greatly reduced access to...everything going forward. It looks like I need to add ratcheting box end wrenches to my collection. Question, the rubber surround fingers. Should...

April '24 Chat --- Got Jokes?

Your buddy should apply for a NC repaired/rebuilt title. It will involve submitting some paperwork, a small fee, and having a state inspector come look at it to make sure he's not vin swapping stolen cars and parts. In your case, if you do the work on the vehicle it will not impact the title.

Between Kennedy's fan clutch and Dipper, you have some axes to grind.

    Built motor oil

Brad, thanks for enlightening. I assume forged pistons are safe to run hotter than OE, and thus, do a greater percentage of their heat rejection back into the combustion chamber? Or, do changes in geometry (de lipping, reducing surface area) help them to not pick up as much heat in the first...

Looking for Allison build/install options near Virginia.

EDIT - if someone is looking at this in the future, Logan Lewis @ Diesels Unlimited (MD) also does transmissions. I haven't spoken with them, but someone else to add to the list for the region.

    Built motor oil

Your turbos are putting heat into the oil but so are eight pistons. At high power, isn't trivial. More viscous oil at temperature would help keep pressure up, but so would keeping the oil cool. Higher grade oil is a cover up. Temperature is the problem. Early L5p oil cooler is 65% more...

    Built motor oil

It sounds like oil cooling is the issue. Is an L5P cooler an option? I'm not 1000 hp, but towing, I slow down when oil pressure begins to fade on grades.
