Looking for some advice here. Crank broke, and the truck was ran after words, drove and moved a couple times, and possibly even did a burnout before she was put to sleep and gutted. LOL
I'm looking to see what yall think of the block. I plan to get new main caps anyway but is the block ok? I've build engines before but this is my first dive all the way to the block for a Duramax. It never came apart and smacked anything, and in fact drove a little shaky but had good power still like this. Just rubbed and shaved some of the block side webbing and main cap took the worst of it. Just looking for some guidance as i do not exactly want to dish out a new block $$$$ but if i have to i guess i'll go with the PPE Short Blocks.
Yes, I've already reached out to a machine shop (Baril Engines) and waiting there answer as well.

You just can't tell without measuring/inspecting the block. Guessing SOMETIMES works, but it's a gamble for sure. Your machine shop will be able to advise you.

They will crack right thru the oiling hole, so be sure and inspect carefully

As mentioned, Clean it up best you can and inspect the main webbing for cracks as posted above. If it looks fine, have a machine shop look it over and inspect it. A mag check is best as it will clearly show cracks that aren't always visible or easy to see.

You're in my neck of the woods (Iron River, MI).

Personally I would avoid Baril at all costs. Their quality has been garbage on diesels lately (last 2 years or so). They do a decent job on heads but I wouldn't let them touch my short block.

I would go to Skarlupka Service in Antigo, WI. They've built all of my Duramax engines and all of my customer's engines until we made the change to DHD just for reputation/turnaround time. It's the old saying of "there is good, fast, and cheap but you can only pick two", they're good and cheap but not fast.

I’ve worked with Baril Engine for years and have consistently had positive experiences with them. Recently, they’ve been especially great to work with, and even the team at the Cat dealership speaks highly of them. I’m sorry your experience was different, but they’ve always treated me well and stood behind their work.

Interesting first/only post here. If you've had positive experiences that's great but I won't recommend them for anything nor will I refrain from giving an honest review.

The issues myself and other shop owners have seen is with their diesel work, never their gas work.
