Deck height on pistons

Mine are out .028" I run the grade 5 gaskets. I fill that you want the piston as close to but not touching the head as possible. I don't agree with just decking the piston to kill compression in a motor. Jeff

Grade 5? how thick is that?
Grade C i read compressed are 0.0394 and I need to double check but i think the piston is 0.013 above the deck

how much play do i safely have?

You can be out .0129 - .0149 when using grade c gaskets (GM spec) grade b gaskets is .0109 - .0129, and a grade is less than .0109.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it! Your :welcome2:

Make sure you check valve to piston clearances when making these type of changes in your motor build. You should have mininum .050 and .070 on intake and exhaust valves respectively. If you use aftermarket cams and deck the heads and block machining valve reliefs in the pistons would be necessary and these clearances are a must do item.

I believe it is more like .080 on intake and .100 on exhaust minimum. Remember this is not a gas motor :D

Henry, do you have thicknesses of each gasket type?
