Ignition column problem - key very hard to turn (not ignition cylinder)

2013 GMC 3500HD Diesel 4WD CC LB DRW

The ignition key is very hard to turn to the ON and START positions

This just happened (not gradually, but a singular event)...I did have an idler pulley fail, so I had to drive it for about 45 minutes in total, without pwr steering assist, to get it home one night, and then to the repair shop the next day. This happened at about the same time, but not sure if related.

I had an automotive locksmith come and look at the cylinder - we pulled the cylinder out of the column, and the cylinder is fine, based on his inspection...the same symptom occurs when a large flat-head screwdriver is placed into the internal lock housing extrusion where the ignition key cylinder engages (with the cylinder removed, of course), so it is something in the column, per the locksmith.

Would this be a problem in the actual column, or is there a sub-component like the lock housing, shift-lock or the anti-theft module that would cause this?

any suggestions? like, perhaps do we have to pull the lock housing off and lubricate?
