Break In oil change

Figured I would bounce this off you guys and see what you have done with your built motors. After my motor was built Chris ran Delvac in it for break in purposes. I changed the oil filter at 500 miles and now I am at the 1000 mile mark. I would like to swap over to Rotella T6 since I ran it in the last motor and it looked great when it came apart(aside from the broken crank). Motor does not seem to be burning any oil so I am thinking the rings are all seated. Should I run conventional oil for another change or should I be good to switch??

Talked to Chris (like I should have in the first place) and he said 1 more oil change with conventional oil. Better safe than sorry on the break in I suppose.

I changed mine 3 times (3000 miles) with conventional rotella. Used t6 and pressures dropped a little lower. I run schaeffers 7000 15w40 now and it really quieted it down

I changed mine at 5 minutes, 100 miles, 500 miles, and went schaffers semi synthetic at 1000 miles. Now I change it every 1000.

To me it all depends on how it broke in. I waited tell 500 to really get on it. Some do it right away. Others give it a couple thousand miles.

I thought you were supposed to judge by blowby and ultimately a compression check to make sure the rings had seated and are sealing to hold an expected pressure? THEN its ok to switch to a semi or full synthetic...but not before

Or is it truly just a guess and go procedure...?
I guess you say you're not using oil, so that's also a good indicator, but again, thought you could check to hit a target compression, to know f'er sure...

Lol, its a nity grity thing when youre looking at a built high output turbo diesel, eh Steve? Dino oil is pretty damn good anyways, yeah? They say with early OCI's using synthetic over conventional oil doesnt truly hold a superior advantage worth fretting over...as long as you're using an oil formulated for turbo diesels with the proper shear load, heat range, wieght and viscosity for your build, you should be golden ;)

Its normally best to get at least 5K miles on one before going full synthetic. Most oil and car manufacturers used to reccomend 7500 before switching.

When I did some research on what oil guys were running in there built pulling trucks and tractors. Most of them were using one of these three oils that have a high zinc content.

- Brad Penn oil
- Schaeffers oil
- Cenpeco oil

Broke mine in with delo 400 15w40 and still continue to use delo 400. Drove normally for 200 miles, then changed it. Started driving semi aggresive for another 150 miles, changed it again then started using the truck for its intended purposes.

82 psi boost with zero blow by.

Idled mine to operating temp and changed the oil. drove it 200 miles changed the oil, drove it to 1k and changed it again. Changed it every 1000 miles after until I lost the motor.

How do you guys like running 20w50 on the street ? I know some people have to let it warm up excessively long in order to keep pressure from blowing a filter off.
