Aftermarket intercooler necessary?

I'm in the middle of an engine build. Got about 21k invested. Mahle race cast pistons, Carrillo rods, af cam, modded heads, 100 0vers, dual pumps and a billet s483 over a Danville 68mm stg2r just to give an idea. Question is do I need an aftermarket intercooler? I've read on here where some say go til she blows. Now mind you I'm lookin for 900-1000hp on max effort. But will keep it at 600-700 unless at the track or dyno which is maybe 4 times a year all together. Also the truck doesnt usually get driven over 5000 miles a year if that makes a difference.

I'm sure someones going to come on and say they've got a stock intercooler running 1500hp. Honestly, just replace it. They work better and can handle the boost you're going to be making.

I had a banks in one of my past trucks, worked well with 60psi.

All that money in the engine and you put mahle race casts in it? Sheesh. I would have at minimum gone fingers.

I've been looking at BD or Mishimoto

Yea I looked at fingers but $2600 for coated an all. I decided on $1800 mahles. My builder suggested with no more then what I do cut and coated lb7 pistons would work. But I said no to that. Like I said it will very rarely see max effort

Whats your truck? The earlier intercoolers seem to hold up better compared to later ones with plastic ends.

I love my mishimoto.

The Banks one works pretty good on stock and lightly modified. You might be exceeding that.

I would put a Banks in it in a heartbeat! I have the Banks in mine and it's the only one we use here. I'm between 92-120psi boost on it without any issues and it is the same intercooler core we use on my engine dyno(we cut the 3" feeds off and welded 4" ones on it) and have ran 1700+hp through it at 100+psi boost and 650+degrees and see a 1psi drop per hundred degrees dropped in IAT.

If it's made it through your testing Mark. That's the one on top of my list right now.

I would do it sinply for the fact I see boost drop of 1-3 psi across my stock unit with a stock ihi turbo. I could only imagine the pressure drop when airflow and boost really get up there.
