83mm turbine wheel potential?

Curious what kind of horsepower numbers people have seen out of 83mm turbine wheels in single turbo built motor applications with more than enough fuel to drive them..gated/ungated.

My turbo is unfortunately an 83mm wheel, I have a precision 46mm gate I will be adding to try and keep drive pressure in check and to not over speed the charger. I plan to push the turbo as hard as possible when my engine is finished and gate the crap out of it.

I'd rather not spend the coin right now upgrading it to an 87mm turbine since i am unsure whether or not im staying single turbo or eventually going twins. If i decide to stay single turbo then I will for sure have it setup with an 87mm turbine.

Current specs are 80/83/.90

From what I have gathered, the 87mm turbine is more than worth the cost if switching from an 83. Like night and day

A .90ar with an 87mm turbine will out perform the same turbo with a 1.10 and 83mm on the top end. And it will make power sooner.

Yeah I would go shopping that thing is tiny. 1.0 is fine for the street even I can't imagine a .9 and 83. I bet that spools like a supercharger haha

Funk had a 75/83 .90 cast wheel, gated setup with a small shot of spray. He went 6.90's 1/8th and 11.0 in the quarter with all his interior in. I think the power can be made with them, just got to be setup right. That was on a stock engine trying to keep it alive.

I've seen 950hp with a cast 475/83mm.90a/r but it's not happy about it! You will be much happier with the 87mm .90a/r. It will spool faster with less drive and egt's and have more HP everywhere in the curve. It's worth it's weight in gold Mike!:thumb:

Just the opposite Ben. It has to do with the design of the wheel. It's all about leverage and the 83mm doesn't do a good job of transferring the energy like the 87mm does. Sit the two wheels next to each other and it becomes obvious. Even on stock injectors the 87mm runs circles around the 83mm.

Many turbos shops I'm sure.

My wife works at Gillett diesel here locally. They have a full turbo dept.

I would never run an 80mm compressor on an 83mm turbine - too much drive pressure and nothing to gain. On 75 and smaller turbos that are fuel limited I see better spool out of the 83, but on a truck with fuel it is no where near being worth what you are giving up everywhere else in the RPM.
