I'm new to this form so I'm going to apologize now if I mess this up. I have an 03 lb7 just purchased the truck to turn into a work stock class pulling truck. Truck has a zf6 which seems to be about extinct anymore started tearing into it last week and found a crack in rear case with gm does not make replacement part any more so order another zf-6,getting ready to remove the trans tomorrow does the trans have to be in 3rd or 4th gear to be removed bc this is what the zf manual says and if so why. Thank you

There's a couple guys here who are very familiar with the ZF. You'll just have to wait until they see this.

i usually dont worry about putting it in any specific gear when i remove it, just whatever gear it is in when i pull the shifter out of the top hat. just make sure its in some kind of gear when u go back in so you can spin the output shaft and get it thru the splines on the clutch disc(s)
