Questions about used engines

Hello. I found a couple used engines, I know what the compression is but they also note another number psi with BW by it. One is 300-300 compression with 80 psi BW and the other is 350-350 compression with 60psi BW. They have about the same amount of miles.

Any ideas on “BW”? I’m sure I will slap my forehead and say of course!

Which engine is better? My thoughts was to move my compounds, headstuds, and injectors. Does that make a difference?

Thank you all!

Happy Thanksgiving!

could it be the testers initial? bob whitworth?

if I was stuck between those two then probably the 350 one but as mentioned above, I'd call first

The initials idea hit me today. I’m going to give them a call. If it is a leak down number, than I assume lower is better.

I have been debating rebuilding mine, but I’m not sure it’s in the budget right now.

Thank you for the help!

I’d assume your prob getting someone else’s issue.. why where the engines pulled in the first place. Would suck to get a used problem then have to rebuild in a year or so.

I wouldn’t assume that! I’m going to guess that’s this is a salvage yard called Spaldings in WA and MT. When we had a salvage yard we sold lots of different motors without issue. You can ask them if it ran or not.

unless you know the grade and age of the oil I'd think that number is pretty useless except for extreme numbers such as really low

I agree, I figure the compression was the most important number and 350 is pretty close to new specs, iirc.

Engines are out of wrecked trucks.

My first choice is to have an engine built, I just keep thinking I want it bulletproof and that gets expensive. I am probably over killing it.

I am looking at this as a way to get my truck back on the road and then build the current engine over time.

Decisions, decisions!

Thank you all!
