Enabling TPMS

Well, I guess I FAIL!

According to the instructions to enable the TPMS, You're supposed to go to go into Chassis > Tire Pressure Monitor > Special Functions > TPM Option Enable, then press exit to leave the menu and save the settings. Well, mine says NO. The "Commanded Status" changed to "Enable", but when I exit, it doesn't stay. So my guess is that the BCM helps to control the system, and that's what's not allowing it to enable. So is there a way to update the BCM and add the functionality (through TIS or whatever)? Thoughts

Edit: That's odd.... Looking at CALID, it has the following:
15120179 - 0000ED6E - New calibration to increase Tire Pressure Monitor initialization time.

Seems like the BCM has the calibrations to support the TPMS, so what the heck?

I figured out my problems enabling the TPMS. Turns out I needed a new PDM. I got one from a guy on DP. First thing I noticed on it was the label on the bottom had "w/TPM" on it. When I got mine out, it didn't. Plugged the "new" one in, went to chassis/TPMS/Enable and it enabled right away. Got all the sensors programmed and it's displaying right.

nice job Dave!!!!!! So your DIC now shows individual tire pressures correctly? Or does it just show when one tire is "low"??

:D

My original PDM didn't have the "w/ TPM" on it.

I wonder if the 05 cluster works with this...?

also...I wonder if there are different part numbers for the "w/tpm" and "w/o TPM" PDM's??? Or if both with and without PDM's are the same 10398572...

Ill have to plug in the tech 2 and see what the part number of my PDM is.

Next time I have the dash apart I'll plug in my 04 cluster and see what I get... I would have thought that the only difference was the programming, but even when I programmed my original PDM with a cal for a 2005 Escalade, it still refused to enable. I'll see what the P/N is from my original PDM when I get home tonight.

Dragging this back up, as I am trying to get TPMS working like this on my truck.

I have a 2006 Denali gas cluster (original 2003 cluster wouldn't show the light), and running a 2004 GMC 2500HD cal in the BCM on my 2003. I get the warning light but just a message when one tire is low to check tires.

Next time I have the dash apart I'll plug in my 04 cluster and see what I get... Did you get a chance to plug in the 2004 cluster? Do you even remember the result after 8 years?
What I would love to know is the VIN from your truck, so I can look up exactly what calibrations were loaded in everything.

@ DAVe3283,
Let me know if you get anywhere with this.

I have an 04 yukon xl that I am planning to add TPMS. I have the PDM with TPMS. But my cluster is a 2006 LBZ Diesel cluster since I swapped in the LBZ powertrain. I have access to a tech2 and my 04 yukon BCM has the same CAL ID that Cougar281 mentioned. Hopefully I can get the 04 yukon BCM to pass all the TPMS data to the 06 LBZ Cluster.

Same issue here - 03 Truck, 06 LBZ swap, new TPM enabled PDM, LBZ cluster, BCM was from an 03. I have the 06 BCM, but my airbags are different, so it popped errors after learning it, so I swapped back.

Now it won't let us program the TMPS - two options as I see it:
Get a real TECH II vice the fully enabled MATCO one I'm using. Second, find a way to get the SRS module to BCM interface to learn to look for the right airbags, not think it has seat airbags and two sensors up front instead of one.

Always open to ideas - as my steering wheel DIC controls don't work with the LBZ cluster, but swap the LLY/LB7 one back in, works fine. I'm assuming its the flashing Tire Pressure warning and note the TPM system isn't working properly is preventing me from getting to the rest of the DIC info.

From my playing around, it seems the BCM and cluster program both have to support the steering wheel controls for them to work. I also found the clusters are picky about changing operating system, as I've bricked a couple trying to do that. Plus hard to find the files to flash on to them, which has really slowed me down. I'm going to try and get back at it this summer and make everything work how I want.

In your case, I'd just flash the BCM to a 2004 OS, so it can put the TPMS in learn mode. It might play nicer with your LBZ cluster too.

I'll post what I find if I ever get this figured out 100%. Just been too busy with other projects.

I'm using the standard GM sensors (ACDelco 15114379, appear to be 315 MHz). I will probably use cheap aftermarket ones for the Suburban, those OE suckers were $43 each

I have TPMS working in the truck. 2004 BCM program and a 2006 Denali gas dash cluster on the stock program. TPMS light works, but it only warns me when a tire is low, doesn't report the current pressures. And the gas dash has no O/D Off light (and no software to trigger it if I added the LED), so I just have to remember if I disabled O/D or not.

I have a plan (and the parts, I hope) to get the O/D light back. But the more I read, the more I think getting real-time pressure readings without going to a 2005+ BCM program is a pipe dream. And the 2005+ BCM OS loses a lot of features I want more.

I'll post what I eventually find, but I don't want to jump the gun before I test my theory.

Careful on using aftermarket/ebay sensors. They generally dont last. I got ripped off on a set that lasted a month-1/2 and the seller refused to return them.
Ive had good luck with sensors on Amazon from a company here in Michigan called S1autoparts.

Im assuming this will work on 03-07s? I just have to buy the correct PDM, sensors, and enable them with a Tech2? Thats it?

The 2004+ appears to be as easy as just buying the sensors and PDM. The 2003 software doesn't support TPMS, so you need to load a 2004 BCM program, and use a newer cluster. This is what has tripped me up: trying to find the best cluster and software for that cluster.

It is far too easy to lose steering wheel controls when switching to a newer cluster. And eBay sellers lie, so it is hard to find a cluster out of a truck with them. My best luck has been to call wrecking yards directly and get them to send me a photo of the RPO sheet.

In theory, you can flash a cluster to enable steering wheel controls. But I've bricked a couple along that learning curve. They're not as forgiving as the BCM and ECU.

Once I figure out what parts and software work best, I'll post it all up.

For my cluster/steering wheel issue- the cluster was from the donor motor truck and it was a fully loaded one and it had steering wheel controls as well (I have the entire column as well since I was swapping in the tap shifter).

So it appears the 2003 bcm may not support the functionality. I thought it was available on some ‘03’s?
I’ll have to figure out the button issue. My DRL stopped working after the swap as well- maybe related?

That's what I figured. Just been a long time since I've heard of a mod for my gen truck. No big deal.

So with my '06 I'll need sensors, the PDM and a friend with a TechII and that's it? Is this functionality in the 2006 OS?
As far as I know all the functionality is in the 2006 OS already, and if the PDM you get is used and has TPMS enabled already, you won't even need a Tech2. Just plug it in, key cycle a couple times to let everything say hi, then initiate a sensor learn with the headlight switch.

The Tech2 is for if the PDM is new, as they ship with TPMS support disabled.

I’m gonna give this a go this weekend.
04 Yukon xl BCM
06 Duramax Cluster
New PDM w/TPMS. (I have tech2 to enable it)
GM OE sensors installed

My steering wheel controls all work correctly so I’ll swap in the pdm and enable tpms and see how it works out.
